Essential Functions 1. Main responsibility is the stability of the rig. He communicates with the Chief Engineer regarding the disposition, loading, ordering and use of fuel, potable and drill water. 2. Ensures the rig conforms to local / international laws relating the vessel's operation, and strictly complies with current pollution regulations. 3. Oversees the maintenance of deck equipment, firefighting and life-saving equipment. 4. Ensures the vessel is seaworthy at all time and maintained/operated in accordance with guidelines in the Marine Operations Manual. 5. Maintains the watertight integrity of the vessel, loading and storage of consumables, securing of supply vessels. 6. Assists the Master in maintaining the vessel's logbook, maintenance reports and other vessel documents as directed. 7. Assist the Master during rig moves and voyage planning. Safety Accountabilities
1. Emergency situations: Chief Mate holds a position on the ship's Emergency Station Bill as Scene Leader. Must perform requirements of Emergency Station Bill for both drills and actual emergencies to include fire, flooding, man overboard, abandon ship, medical, and spill response.
2. Inspect, test and maintain all lifesaving equipment and firefighting appliances - ensure readiness for immediate use when required.
3. Ensure compliance with environmental protection requirements as specified by Company policies and Regulatory bodies.
4. Ensure that the Company HSE policies and other programs are communicated to and understood by all rig personnel.
5. Play an active part in the weekly meetings, and all other Company safety management systems.
6. Ensure new arrivals receive a full safety briefing and induction on the rig.
7. Ensure a high standard of hygiene and housekeeping is maintained onboard the rig.
8. Assist the Master in all emergency situations and emergency protection responses.
9. Assist the Master in coordinating weekly emergency drills along with monitoring and evaluation of the deck crew responses.
10. Assist in reviewing updating the vessel's safety case in consultation with vessel and shore-based management
