MASTER'S THESIS, TITLE: "Surface Structure of Self-Assembled Thiol Monolayers on Au(111) Substrate".
ABSTRACT:
The interfacial adhesion and friction are important phenomena while concerning performance and reliability of nano- and microelectromechanical systems. The main motivation of this thesis is to gain the basic knowledge about friction processes occurring in such systems. The process of coating, namely functionalization of the surfaces of electromechanical components by self-assembled hydrophobic monolayers, such as thiol molecules, gives hope to solve a number of technical problems in the future.
As a part of this work, ordered monolayers made from thiol molecules were developed. This was done by incubation process on a gold substrate in specific solution. The subject of the study were six monomolecular coatings made from self-organized thiol molecules: 4′-Methyl-4-mercaptobiphenyl, 4′-Hydroxy-4-mercaptobiphenyl, 9-Sulfanyl -1-nonanol, 1-Dodecanethiol, 1-Pentadecanethiol and 1-Octadecanethiol. Among other things, the surface morphology was determined by means of scanning tunneling microscopy and atomic force microscopy. In order to confirm the functionalization of the surface, the contact angle measurements were performed.
For the purpose of my work, I designed and built my own wettability measuring device.

B.Eng. : "Adhesion, topography and roughness of polymer materials mimicking the gecko-like adhesion"
ABSTRACT:
By mimicking the hierarchical construction of the Tokay’s gecko pads, nowadays, scientists create a super-adhesive materials which exhibit a high level of dry adhesion. These materials, as for the gecko, provide high level of adherence to a number of substrates.
This diploma thesis contains an overview of selected materials in terms of their importance, as well as, provides information about suitability of the multiwall carbon nanotube, polyvinyl chloride nanocomposites as a materials for gecko-like adhesion mimicking. This was done by means of the roughness and adhesion force measurements by using Atomic Force Microscopy technique. Furthermore, the surface morphology of described nanocomposites and in addition, selected commercial anti-skid pads was characterized.
