I'm untrained to the classic experience of RPG, how far back do they go? I remember the adventure gamebooks by Steve Jackson and Ian Livingstone, which came out in the early 1980s when I was a child. Dungeons and Dragons was also out at this time and I've since seen boardgames of this in charity shops. What else is there, more vintage than this? Furthermore, now that computer games exceeded expectations and imagination, what is the value of playing the games which use the imagination?

Serious question.

I can't agree with following statement:

"now that computer games exceeded expectations and imagination"

Computer games didn't exceed imagination and probably they never will!!

Reading myself back, I can't agree with it either.

Computer games haven't exceeded the imagination, but I suppose I meant that as a kid playing Granny's Garden, I never imagined Warcraft.

I'm not sure what could actually exceed the imagination. I guess it depends whose!

IMO the main think in playing RPG is not exceeding the imagination, but meeting people, spending time together. During my stay in London when I didn`t know English very well I had been playing D&D once a week in Green Goblin pub having polish - english dictionaty beside me. It was a great time!Agnieszka Bartnik edytował(a) ten post dnia 29.01.09 o godzinie 23:12

Computer games made a great progress - it's obvious, last releases (our Witcher) are stunning - graphic and complexity are pushed to the limits. But... role-playing is a game of imagination, creating stories and ROLE playing - it can't be done with, even the best machine and software. So - I like to play computer games but Role-playing always will be my number one!

I believe the first games you could compare to what we play nowadays were happening in late 1960s in the UK and US. They were recreating real battles with alternative outcome, later adding fiction to it (J.R.R. T. if I'm not mistaken).
Furthermore, now that computer games exceeded expectations and imagination, what is the value of playing the games which use the imagination?

Am I correct, that what you're asking here is, why would someone play using imagination "only", when they can swim through stunning graphics and flashy effects?

I'd say, that by asking such a question you'd simply underestimate the power of imagination and unconstrained power to make the worlds you imagine evolve and suprise in a way no computer game will permit for a very long time if ever.
Does any game let you be whoever you want? With the looks of really special character, unique traits, and abilities? Will it ever give you a story so hard to untangle that you'd spend hours thinking of a safe way from the perils, while (like in real life) there's no walkthrough in the internet and you can never tell whether what you do is right and wrong? And finally... Can you ever really act like an evil rogue, or completely twisted mage in any computer game and I mean ACT, behave, feel, and learn to understand the motives and history of your character? Those things not only provide one of the best entertainments ever, but most of all broaden your horizons.
