I love photography! It's one of very few requited loves in my life, so I've decided to make it the subject of the first thread I initiate in GL.

There've been photos in the history of photography that influenced the viewers more than others. Each of us keeps such photos in mind for years. What are your photo icons? Which of the pictures you've come across are the most important/interesting/appealing to you?

One of mine:

Marilyn. Her last photo session taken by Bert Stern 6 weeks before her death.

WTC 9/11/01

Day that I will never forget.

I think this should go with one of Szymborska's most touching poems:

They jumped from the burning floors—
one, two, a few more,
higher, lower.

The photograph halted them in life,
and now keeps them
above the earth toward the earth.

Each is still complete,
with a particular face
and blood well hidden.

There’s enough time
for hair to come loose,
for keys and coins
to fall from pockets.

They’re still within the air’s reach,
within the compass of places
that have just now opened.

I can do only two things for them—
describe this flight
and not add a last line.

It looks like we've already had a similar thread...

Yet, if we mean ICONS, the ones that got us down on our knees and melt our hearts, if we really do, here's someone who surely meets the criteria :)

PS: Please remove picture links when quoting a message. Otherwise, the picture gets "reproduced" making the thread long and loading slowly. KTHXBAI!

You know, I’ve developed an obsession regarding 9/11… at first I thought it was just trauma related but it just keeps on going. It’s been so many years and I can recall every second of that day and play it out at will… whenever I see anything on TV about that day, or events that led up to it, I can’t help but watch it. I’ve read books and reports including the joke that was the 9/11 commission report… it’s not a negative obsession, but I think it may have more to do with trying to understand, it's sort of weird.

I can't TOTALLY relate, because I was watching it in my slippers from a comfy couch in my house in Poznan... but I can TOTALLY understand. I think for any of us who were THERE it would have a very different dimension.

Very detached from reality when seeing it on TV, but just as surreal when looking at it from up close. NYC is always full of camera crews and TV stations etc etc so you sort of get used to the weirdness, that however was something which I still have issues fully grasping .. I mean just the extent of the damage done coupled with the body count. I remember when reporters at first started quoting possible body count and numbers were just unimaginable. Knowing that 50k people go through those building daily... just no words to even describe it.

hmmm... yeah, similar, but not exactly the same. There are photos that live in our "collective mind" but do not define the history of mankind, because they describe only the history of single, sometimes anonymous human beings or the history of photography.

The power of such photos is that they translate the anonymous numbers into the single man's despair and horror, and this persistent thought at the back of your head: it could have been me.

I've been to an exibition of his works in Ireland. It was in 2006 when I saw his works for the first time. It touched me deeply.
his documentary images always taken in black and white, kind of dirty and sad pictures, showing unhappiness and dignity of people in the conditions wherever they are, live or try to survive.
especially touching are those taken in the lands of Third World. )as the one you showed)/

Here is some from the Migration series( gallery 3 parts):
