Poles - especially teenage Poles - may read junk, but after all we've produced Joseph Conrad, haven't we...
what's the point of reading something you find extremely boring (See mandatory reading assignments for Polish lessons)
What's the point of going to the opera? Booooring, there are musicals for "normal" people.
Classical music? Boooring. There's disco instead.
Poetry? Boooring. We have hip-hip or rock anthems.
Russian novels? Boooring, there are films based on them.
Economic analysis? Boooring, let's read a tabloid.
That's a lame excuse of those too lazy to make the effort.
Though I understand that forcing a teenager to read "Lord Jim", a sprawling narrative originally published in instalments, is not a good idea. One cannot expect him to focus on the imagery while interpreting Freudian symbols and looking for references to French literature. If I could, I would replace this item with "The Secret Agent" or "Victory". Or ask the kids to read "Heart of Darkness" and watch "Apocalypse Now".
