He was (one of) the most popular writer(s) in the mid-nineties in Poland.

Lidia, I think something is wrong with this link

thanks, sorry!

I can also remember AL, a sequel to Birdy, though (as with most sequels) not nearly as good; and VARNISH.

I've read quite a few of his book, as I recall: Birdy (of course :-)), Last Lovers, Houseboat on Seine and the two above mentioned. Of all these I think Last Lovers made the biggest impact, but I must admit I don't remember that much of it.
I was still in primary school when I was literally swallowing his books, which from today's perspective seems a bit too young for me (too young to really understand and appreciate eg. Birdy and all the war connotations), and maybe that's why after a while they all seemed so similar to me. Not in the issues they raise but rather in character/style/atmosphere they create.
There is only one more author that gave me the same impression - Jonathan Carroll. I guess it could be the case with Paulo Coelho, but I've only managed to go through two of his books before I decided it's not for me.

One thing I clearly remember though is wanting to spend some time living on a boat floating down Seine :-).

So what had the biggest impact on you, Lidia?

I know the guy, many of my schoolmates (both males and females) would spends hours, days, weeks in a "permenant awe" state, blabbing about how great his books were.

He became ridicolously popular in PL in the 90s, and since those were my (mild)rebel times I voluntarily boycotted all fads and trends.

So my answers is - I've never read any of his books, even though I've about them a lot.

I've seen "Birdy" too.

EDIT: Birdy, Birdie, whatever. This shows how much I care, heheJarek A. edytował(a) ten post dnia 30.10.08 o godzinie 14:46

I think I read all of them over the period of some years.

Now I'd be scared to read them again as they may be completely unsuitable for what I need.

But in secondary school, similar as Marta, I was mesmerized by his worlds.

And each book had its own impact.

'Birdy' was magic. And I never liked pigeons after that ;)

'Last lovers' was read far too early for me, but still great.

'Dad' was a psychological novel about toxic relationships in a family, very bluntly shown, combined with understanding of the old age.

In a way he wrote about the same things over and over, but it got to me quite well.

The book about the fire and the death of Wharton's family was a very profound testimony of him coping with the tragedy.

And the every present paintings, brushes, visual sensitivity of a painter, plus the description of the boat worlds...

So much.

I completely forgot about him, these news bring these feelings back :)

Carroll was ok in the first two books, later on I felt he was repeating himself and didn't find it interesting.
Coelho never won my heart - too abstract and boring. And far too popular.
In fact I don't consider him as literature.

In my school times I read "Last lovers", "Dad", "Birdy" and "Midnight clear". I considered the latter to be the best of them, but I liked "Dad" very much, too. However, my literature taste has changed over the years and I am not sure if I would now find Wharton's books valuable.Aleksandra P. edytował(a) ten post dnia 30.10.08 o godzinie 20:15

I never heard of this guy till I went to Poland. I think it's interesting how different writers are popular in different countries. Paolo Coelho's another one. People plough through his stuff in Poland quite happily. Bizarre :-)

Yeah! Was going to write something similar to Dave... Never heard of him either before I came here.

What is is about him that captured the Polish imagination?

And, while we're at it, why do you all like Sting?

Speaking of Sting, when he retires, will he change his name to "Stang"? Ohohoh!

Actually, I always prefered Stewart Copeland. "Don't Box Me In" is such a great track that I can't even find the right words to describe it. Plus, "Rumblefish" is a pretty kick-ass movie.

But yeah, most people I know do like Sting/The Police. Kinda funny, now that you mention it.

the only book of Wharton I've read was the Last Lover's.
but I'd highly recommend it.

Actually, there was a time Wharton'and Carroll' books were on the top shelves. I even meet Carroll at one of his promotional trips to Poland. I guess it was in 2003, when his book White Apples came out.
As far as I know he often visits Poland, so it also means his books are still the same popular as e.g.the books of P. Coehlio.Ania S. edytował(a) ten post dnia 31.10.08 o godzinie 09:38

I think I only read "Birdy", as the other books didn't appeal to me.
Here's a discussion on Wharton

Like Jarek, I was a bit of a rebel, and then, when I was ready to reach for Wharton, I found him boring and pretentious.

god, i hate coelho.
I mean, The Alchemist is quite good but the other stuff is just dull and meaningless!

I also read Birdy and TRIED to go through Al = BORING!

And I like Sting because I like this type of beauty and adore him playing contrabass.
I mean, Englishman in New York f.e. is a great jam session song.

Temat: William Wharton

Wharton is different than Cohelo, since some of his books were actually good (Birdy was great, and I also enjoyed A Midnight Clear a lot).

Cohelo is plain bucket of crap.

Sting is cool. He always looks like he doesn't care. Also between his early bullshit and latest manure he managed to do some good stuff.

I don't like Sting... not much into Wharton either.
I picked up "Birdy" at one point... and put it down pretty quickly.

Sting is cool?

I'd say he's the very antithesis of cool! He's a pretentious tantric poser!!!! And Englishman in New York is one of those songs you could strap me down and torture me to death by playing it on a loop...
