Temat: What's wrong with a grope now and then?

I agree with Steve,
only five years ago, I flew from Warsaw to Dublin (Krakow had no connection) for around 800zł. For the same price, I could have sat in a coach (brown velour seats, and about 25" pitch)for 40 hours there and 40 hours back. Last week, I and my brother-in-law flew from Krakow to Dublin and back for less. Don't forget it was Ryanair that started the revolution in air travel. To quote my brother: "People pay 20% of the price they used to, and complain that they don't get a free sandwich."

Fair enough. But I chose not to choose Ryanair because of what I wrote above :)

Now I use Aer Lingus instead of RA and since I fly somewhere
once a week, give or take, my experience with their service has
> always been very positive.

If I travelled as often as you and the company was paying I think
I'd go for a full-service airline too if I could. At least they look after you more if you miss connections, and in fact provide
connections.

I don't have the option of using Ryanair anyway, but don't like them because of the attitude of their MD, and would prefer not to use them (unless they were the much cheaper option when I wanted to fly). Their PR is crass and arrogant. They don't even pretend to give a shit about carbon emmisions and keep talking bullshit about their planes being amongst the youngest and most 'green'.
Don't believe this! Their planes are young as they have only expanded strongly during the past 5 years. In 10 years I'm quite
certain they'll be using planes that are 10-15 years old. Only 5
years ago they were still using 25-year old B737-200s.

Ahhh, that's better, I needed to release a bit of pressure.Steven H. edytował(a) ten post dnia 11.02.08 o godzinie 16:30

Me too :) And I am 100% certain that next time I will pay 4 times more if I have the chance to fly with other airlines.

I have used Ryanair for business travel (anyone hear the phrase "cost effective", huh?) - they are ok on the short haul. But I would never consider using them on my private trips with a small baby.

I chose Aer Lingus and paid a few quids more, but it was worth it. Extremely nice flight attendants, good flight, trained pilots (not landing like a potatoes sack on the floor, which is almost always the case with Ryanair).

The worst experience with losing bags though I had with SAS. I had a transfer in CPH and in 20 flights I did, in 11 cases they've lost my bag. Outrageous, but I did get some compensation afterwards.

Awesome... Just like me and my flights with BMI from Belfast City. Same story - I think I had maybe a couple of flights with them which were alright. All other were either massively delayed, or my bags were lost or god knows what else happened. And they charge you premium so now instead of them I fly to Heathrow with Aer Lingus :)

This is another type of comment that I'm suspicious of, i.e. that pilots of one EU company are better or worse than those on another, based on someone's belief that a plane has landed bumpily (or that there was turbulence, which definitely isn't connected to the airline).
Do we have any pilots in the house who can comment on a) whether there are standard requirements for pilot qualifications b) whether landings (which are often fully-automated anyway) are influenced by pilot skill or preferences, or by airports' documented standard approaches?

hehe, my opinion is just based on my own experience with Ryan (just one, so a bit poor, I must admit) and experiences of my friends and they say landings are always very bumpy with Ryanair. I've flown with some other lines and I've never ever experienced such bumpy landing as the one on board of that Ryan plane.

Anyway, I do believe skills of a pilot are still crucial when it comes to take offs and landings.Patrycja P. edytował(a) ten post dnia 12.02.08 o godzinie 13:02

Perhaps it is one of these cosmic coincedences, but I am just saying so from my previous experiences. Unfortunately, EU does not provide official test system of "bumpy landings" like NCAAP does for crash test.

So all in all, we are down to subjective opinions. I will stand over my comments even if I have been unlucky to sit on the 0.5% of flight ending in dreadfully unsubtle landings.

Just a line from me - I've had two aborted landings in my life and both with Ryanair. On the other hand, I had real pleasure in landing at night with no gear on Benghazi airport once so I can't complain that much about RA really :)

Never used RyanAir but a lot of my slients do and they never complained. Worst lost baggage experience - Delta. They lost my bags TWICE ;) Worst crew - Iberia. Worst landing - only once, during a really bad weather in Munich - PL LOT but wasn't the pilot's fault I guess - although we all had the feeling the plane touched the ground and then started to slide... only over sandpaper :)
Worst flying experience - don;t remember of it was Iberia or Spanair; Granada to Madrid on the plane I hate the most - Douglas. Felt like a really bumpy ride.
My dad says there's nothing like flying a VERY old plane in Russia (I think it was a flight to Yalta) during a storm. He actually opted for walking back home... a couple thousand miles ;D
