Hello everyone;) I'm rather new one here. Which topic of Anglosphere would you recommend particularly?

You could start off by answering FFF (Five for Friday).

Btw your profile pic looks like sth from a gothic horror film.

Hi Katarzyna,

First of all, welcome. :)

Second, it's totally upto you what/how to call yourself, but I personally find it weird when a Pole replaces his/her name with the Anglosaxon counterpart.

For example:
"Jerzy" becomes "George"
"Marcin" becomes "Martin"
"Tomasz" becomes "Thomas"
and so on.

It sounds horrifyingly funny to me.
But of course, I might be the only one who thinks that way.
Just my opinion.

Have a nice time!

What would be the Anglosaxon version of your name? ;)

I think school teachers and their programmes are to blame.

One of the teaching techniques is providing foreign language "equivalents" of the students' names to teach them the sound system, particularly vowels, in a foreign language. I've noticed that many Poles use their "English" names when they've had contact with English only at school.

I don't like it, either.

Not necessarily. My dad, for instance, used to call me Agnes when i was a child- just a sort of a pet name, so i'm quite used to that FORM of my name and son't see it as a different language; secondly, not every Anglo-Saxon can pronounce my name correctly- i find that especially the 'sz' part is posing problems for natives here (ireland). So, i'd rather be called Agnes than Agnieska which, to me, sounds horribly!

Temat: Welcome and Introductions:

As a foreigner and non-native speaker, I'd rather be given a chance to make my own choice whether or nor I can pronounce somebody's name. I definitely prefer to call a John - John, not Janek, even though my [j] might not be very British. I also prefer Bernd being Bernd not Bernard, which is much easier to pronounce. But it's my point of view, I respect others.

Temat: Welcome and Introductions:

But of course you can and you do have that choice- all you have to do is ask the person to give her 'proper'name. I was only talking about my case- it may be different with any other person. Personally, whenever i introduce myself i say i'm agnieszka, only when sb can't pronounce it i tell them that they can use English version- i don't mind.

Oh that explains. I didn't know, thank you.

I personally find it extremely irritating when Poles tell me an Anglicised version of their name.

No English person would ever Polonise their own name.

It's a question of pride.

My wife introduced herself to me as 'Margaret'. Of course, I now call her Gosia.

For Poles who attempt to Anglicise their names - please don't do it. We, as in native speakers, don't like it at all, so use your 'real' names.

Sure. Still, people seem to think it's the "better" way of introducing themselves, this conviction comes from somewhere outside the classroom. Personally, I always take time to talk with students about that. if they decide to become "John" instead of "Jan", it better be their conscious choice. Anyway, most of them "stay Polish" once they realize it's no must to change names.

Nothing to apologize for. You provided a good subject for discussion, since most people do it, strongly disliking the idea at the same time - they think they have to. It feels good telling people they may stay themselves :)

I believe she should be a candidate for the aardvark elect in Anglosphere. We need a firm hand to administer 'discipline'. It has been rather quiet of late.

We could also invite that hot Ukranian politician, whatever her name is.
