I don't speak the language. :)
It`s my "aha" moment then:)
But most of the Polish vowels have both shorter and longer versions, as far as I can remember.
Stop kidding me! Do they? Is there another thing I have to learn about my native language? I`ve already had to learn some grammar from a foreigner...

Aha, so long vowels are just diphthongs and thriphthongs. Thank you:)

The Polish and German "r" are different sounds.

Which one can't you do?

Both. Seems like my tongue can't get used to either; funny thing is, I learned German as a small kid, not to mention Polish!

There are only three "r" sounds (as far as I know)

Is the English one the only one you can do?

I can do the French ;)
To make matters worse, I can do the German "r" as a separate sound, and the Polish "r" almost right in just a few words. As for the English one, I probably get it almost right, you'd have to see for yourself.
Wanna make me go crazy? Ask me to say "rabarbar" :)Tatiana S. edytował(a) ten post dnia 11.08.08 o godzinie 00:26

I have no problem with Polish "r", but when it comes to the German one...heh. Somehow, it always sounds either too soft or too exaggerated :( Or even...too French, oddly enough. My German tutors kept asking me, how much time I spent in Paris. ;)

I used to have issues with proper pronunciation of words with double “oo” – hook, tooth, foot, book… also “th” for a while was a fun one. Words like “ditto” used to cause a chuckle in a classroom full of teens each time it would leave my mouth.

Rafał, they always laughed at me in high school when I said "Cheerios" I guess I overdone the "o"
+ "Reese's" went particulary wrong, too ;/

I love it when old threads come up.
Remember when we went to Green coffee and the lady had to ask me twice what I'd ordered? :D
Do I sound Japanese when I speak English, btw?

I remember when I first came here I couldn't pronounce words beginning with "trz...." so even if I only wanted three of something, I'd order four because "cztery" was pronouncable, whereas "trzy" was beyond my abilities.

You didn't seem to have problems ordering three beers at Heineken... ;)

I think the original word 'txacoli' might be pronounced 'tksakoli', but I'm not sure... Dfficult in the same way that 'tczew' is.

Back to Polish, I always found it hard to get into to words that begin with a double consonant, like 'ssak'. I feel a bit silly stuttering the 's' like I've got a speech impediment... Surely one 's' would have sufficed?

You say double 's' sounds like a speech impediment. Imagine the torment of us pronouncing the English 'th'. No wonder people would rather say 'Zis and zat' than risk sounding like they're lisping!

I don’t know if you remember the “Batman” movie with Arnold.. anyway… Burger King had these Batman cups with different characters on it. One time my friends and I were heading home after a party. I was the designated driver… (ie. Not drunk enough to crawl)… upon a “sudden request”, we pulled into the parking lot of the BK and while the requestors ran into the porcelain god chapel for a quick warship, I proceeded inside with another member of my jolly bunch to get some refreshments. My friend noticed one cup in particular that I guess was missing from his collection and tried asking the lady for it…
Since he was way past the stage of incoherent babble, all he could say was “Ten!, ten!”
Yes – ten.. haha.. not ten as a number but ten as in this one! Hahaha… before we realized, we were holding ten wrapped up cups. Too tired and wasted to even try to argue with the lady we paid for ten cups and left… they came in very handy on the way back.
