Temat: Weird words

Here's a subject that can't be controversial.
Today I read a word that I physically can't pronounce. It's got weird consonants together - for an English speaker. I was wondering if native Polish speakers, who are not thrown by consonant clusters, can pronounce it.
The word is Txacoli. It's a basque wine.

The word is Txacoli. It's a basque wine.

It took me a minute, but I think I managed! But it still sounds a bit ropey.

I remember when I first came here I couldn't pronounce words beginning with "trz...." so even if I only wanted three of something, I'd order four because "cztery" was pronouncable, whereas "trzy" was beyond my abilities.

"Tczew" cause me a lot of trouble for a while. No idea why they felt the need to add the "T" in front of the quite adequate, in my opinion, "cz".

In later years I have found myself getting more and more bored with Poles trying to get me to say "the table with broken legs" which I still can't say. Now refuse to try. It actually makes me fairly angry now if someone tries the "chrząszcz brzmi w trzecinie" routine. Even though I can say it, I resent being turned into a performing seal.

There was a barman in an Irish pub in Gdansk who always used to say "nie rozumiem" when any British guy asked for trzy of anything. I'm sure our pronunciation was bad but he was still trying to wind us up.

I don't really find it funny to laugh at those who're brave enough to try to pronounce those tricky Polish tongue twisters.
Apart from Hungarian, Czech is wonderful as well;)

That's how I would write "Chrząszcz brzmi w trzcinie" in Turkish with Turkish letters.
Once you know how the letters should sound, pronounciation and writing in Turkish is very easy.
For example, letters like "a" and "c" have only 1 pronounciation. They sound "a" and "c" each and every time you see them in a word. Not like in English or in Polish, the pronounciation changes with the adjacent letters.
Also, there are no words with more than 2 adjacent consonants, so, no mouth and tongue acrobatics.ilter K. edytował(a) ten post dnia 10.08.08 o godzinie 07:52

I think the original word 'txacoli' might be pronounced 'tksakoli', but I'm not sure... Dfficult in the same way that 'tczew' is.

Back to Polish, I always found it hard to get into to words that begin with a double consonant, like 'ssak'. I feel a bit silly stuttering the 's' like I've got a speech impediment... Surely one 's' would have sufficed?

Polish is ok. But some czech or croatian tongtwisters. Russian are quite interesting sometimes. Like joking Russian ones:

Na dvore - trava. Na trave - drova. Na drovah - bratva. Kak kurniot bratva, vsja bratva v drova! :)))

or Shla Sasha po shosse i sosala sushku :))

German ones: Kleine Kinder koennen keine Kuemmelskoerner kau'n.
Der Cottbuser Postkutscher kutscht den Cottbuser Postkutschkasten.

Er, I have missed (mixed) the "a" sound in Polish, sorry :)
Nothing particular with 'a' comes to my mind, probably because it is the least varied vowel in Polish but especially because I don't speak the language. :)
