Temat: Warsaw: second most boring city in Europe

Well, so a recent survery claims:

http://euobserver.com/9/25826?rss_rk=1

Does the thrusting throbbing capital of Poland deserve such a harsh accolade?

Brussels won the title of the most boring. I'm just wondering in what way it's more boring...

Will post my views shortly. Anyone care to comment?

Forget Warsaw, come to WrocLove.

Surveys, surveys.... . The whole world seems to rely on surveys.
Don't you think that (1) comparing Warsaw to London, Paris, Prague or Rome is like comparing Pcin Dolny to Warsaw, WrocLove, Gdańsk or Kraków?
(2) One can find even the liveliest city in the world boring and sad if you are lonely or sad when staying in it. That's how I found Paris, where I was very unhappy and lonely. No denying that its architecture is wonderful. On the other hand, I loved Zurich and would never describe it as a boring place.

(3)Tourists coming to Warsaw should know that it is not a great tourist attraction. The main attraction of the city is that it is still here.

I agree, however, that much more could have been done so far to turn it into a real capital. Sadly, since WWII it has always been run by politicians who have no bloody idea of what this business, i.e running a city, is about nor do they have any vision for the future. The present lady keeps grinning like a Cheshire cat, instead of looking for some new solutions to let the city stretch its wings.Wendy Tweed edytował(a) ten post dnia 15.03.08 o godzinie 22:19

@ Steve - do we have access to the same web-page?

Brussels, the capital of Europe, is the most boring city on the continent, despite its renown for its waffles, chocolates, and comic books, according to a survey of international travellers published on Wednesday (12 March).

The city just beat out Zurich and Warsaw for the title, who came second and third in the race for the most somniferous town in Europe.

@ Wendy

Warsaw is maybe not to be compared with London or Paris, but why not with Prague?
And, you see, Zurich is not that much boring city for you, so this is the power of surveys.
And, any criteria have had been given? Obviously not!

This comparison seems unfair to me for historical reasons. Warsaw was 99% erased from the earth and whatever it could now have to offer to tourists was bombed to the ground. It also lost its people - real Varsovians. Prague,on the other hand, was left almost untouched, with all its architecture, bridges, castles, palaces and statues there.
Just think of Wilanów Palace alone: completely looted and devastated by Nazis and then Russians. Then think of the Royal Castle, Krakowskie Przedmieście and of what we now call the centre of Warsaw - it was all rubble with single walls sticking out here and there. But you know the story, don't you?Wendy Tweed edytował(a) ten post dnia 16.03.08 o godzinie 00:21

Warsaw...

The things that I find interesting... The central station - nothing like it in the world, like a strange microcosm. Never been, but the Stadion 100 lecia - I find the idea of a decaying stadium unofficially converted into a massive unruly bazar quite fascinating. Unfortunately, it won't be here much longer. And of course, the Palace of Culture - a magnificent buiding full of modern historic significance, roundly hated by most of Warsaw. Similarly, The Eiffel Tower was loathed by Parisians at first. However, they grew to like it. The Palace of Culture has never enjoyed the same reversal of fortune...

Apart from that, what have you got? Large souless streets lined with grey uninspiring modern architecture dotted with delapidated glories of a bygone era. Yup, there's new stuff being built in the skyscraper glass style. But so what? There's no heart or soul there. The restaurants are better than Gdansk, for sure. But go to Paris or London and make a different comparison. The clubs are good but if you're a bloke you can't get in them unless you're accompanied by a super model or you're a record producer and roll up in a Porsche. Life's too short to blag your way past a pair of oversize twats standing at the door. There are more concerts than other cities in Poland; then again, the attractions pale in comparison to London or Manchester, for example.

I was asked my opinion on this matter by a journalist for Rzeczpospolita: how to make Warsaw more attractive for tourists ... and I didn't know what to say.

I do I do...
In this matter I could agree with you.
Warsaw made much more effort in the last 60yrs, than Prag, concerning the historically located circumstances...

I have said it before. I love Warsaw and I miss it every day I'm not there. As far as I'm concerned, if she ever became a tourist attraction, I would have to divorce her.

(this would've been a good place for the joke , "...but then again, I like PINK eye," but I'm serious about it). :)

What does boring mean? Boring for who?
As long as a city can provide jobs, shops, cinemas, a theatre or two, and then some parks .... I don't need anything else. OK, pretty architecture is nice, but architecture doesn't talk to you, go for a drink with you, marry you.
If you aren't interested in clubs, then a thriving club scene is of no relevance to you either.

I lived in Paris, but in the end hated it because of the people (noise, dirt, social problems, etc.). It is a beautiful city on the whole though.
If Zurish is a tidy, clean, civilised city, then I'd love to go there. I'd love to trade places with those people who prefer 'atmosphere' as 'atmosphere' to me seems to indicate the chaotic preferences of (very) young people.

Brussels is a great place. Lots to do, beautiful architecture, the best food in Europe. Warsaw's not so bad too.

If they want boring, they should have a look at Riga, Vaduz or Minsk.

If the survey dissuades Brit and Irish stag party weekenders from choosing Warsaw - GREAT!

While visiting Warsaw, I found it very entertaining. I wasn't trying to compare it to NYC or any other city that I have been familiar with. Every city is different, each one offers a different variety of places and people. I loved the fact that after 23:00 everything was pretty much closed in Stare Miasto. It was almost surreal. I brought a friend with me, who's never been to Poland. Imagine this perfect moment - we were walking around Stare Miasto, it was around 22, it was very nice and quiet. All of the sudden someone started playing Chopin in one of the pubs and the music travelled in between streets echoing. It was almost like watching a movie.

Wow, sounds gordious with the Szopen-based story!

However the neighbouring Rynek Nowego Miasta
is oustandingly charmful either, but less known, which makes him additionaly atracctive.

I once came across a group of men on a stag party, who'd paid for a hotel, had bought airline tickets, had travelled all the way from the UK (somewhere round Birmingham, from the accents), travelled to a foreign capital, in a country they hadn't been to before and decided to spend all day playing pool in Champions' Bar. Some people have too much money and no imagination.

It always depends whatever you do like or not, STEVE!

Pomorskie Trójmiasto is a cery nice place in deed, diffrent type from both Warszawa and Kraków very nice places, which are diffrent from each other either, and the Lubuskie Trójmiasto is diffrent
from all the three above mentioned, but still nice ...

All rite - now a bit auto-commercial :)
