... Furthermore, why will an employer willingly agree to pay above the market rate if others are willing to work for the usual amount?
Because this potential employee has the talent above the average.

An example from myself.

I used to work as a recording technician in a sound recording studio. For ... 10 tomatoes.
One day I was offered a job to work in the production department of a radio station. For 14 tomatoes, part-time.

We agreed on terms for the start, I started to work with the 'average' pay for my new title at the new place, while continuing in my -then- current job.

After I proved that I can do more for their bussiness (at the radio station), I asked for a rise. A LOT more than the average for my title (which was, at the time "producer", in a radio station production environment).
The average media house producer used to earn 17 tomatoes.
I was able to pull 35.
Probably because, the employer was clever enough to see where things are going to, with me on board.

Now this might not be your usual case, but if I am a normal human being with a working brain and a desire to improve, I don't think I'm exceptional.

Let's say someone offers me 20 tomatoes to translate a leaflet on how to grow tomatoes into Turkish, then no matter how brilliant your Turkish translation skills are, I am never going to offer you thirty-five tomatoes to do the job for me.

In fact, I'm not even going to offer you twenty tomatoes, because I have to give other people tomatoes to cover my costs, and I will also have to keep a certain number of tomatoes for myself, so that I can eat as well.

And if someone else offers to do the work for ten tomatoes, then I won't give you seventeen or even fourteen tomatoes.

It's all quite simple really.warren whitmore edytował(a) ten post dnia 04.12.09 o godzinie 13:00

The "Big Mac Index" is an instrumentalization that shows how far off the real value of any given currency is.

Part of it asks how long do you have to work to buy a Big Mac - Big Mac? Because they're virtually everywhere, but they cost more in Hawaii than in Detroit.

Give me a shovel and tell me how long I have to dig to buy three cheeseburgers. That's for me. :)Joj Y. edytował(a) ten post dnia 04.12.09 o godzinie 12:49

But it is just like buying oranges in the bazaar... there's an average value in the marketplace.

Your example is almost identical to selling something, not someone's talent+experience+time.

I know that things are simple from your point of view, because I understand it as well, but I'm sure you are able to understand mine, without a try. You are just trying to prove something, I guess.

btw I don't condone that word. I used it in reference to an old joke for WW.

The way out of this (i.e. to still make a profit even if you're forced to sell things for 10 tomatoes instead of 20 is to increase your turnover proportionally to how much lower price you have to accept per item of what you're selling (provided you still have a margin above your costs).
When it comes to services, you can only increase the turnover of your work until you can't work any faster or in a more streamlined way. If you want to cross this threshold, you'll have to start employing people to work for you (but then you'd have to pay them even less and still find people who would agree to work for you).

Warren, you're right, although there's one flaw in the Turkish translation example: you might find that you'll get a crap translation for 20 tomatoes and Ilter might prove that indeed his translation skills are twice as good and worth twice as much. Then how much you'd pay would depend on whether you need such high quality of work.

The thing about negotiating price and payment is the fact that we're free to advertise and sell ourselves, which means we say we have something extra that other people don't, and then we talk them into believing that the buyer will benefit from that extra skill of ours (which sometimes is not the case). Then it's the battle of reason and emotions, sometimes if we strike the right chords, we might as well succeed in getting more than the buyer was initially prepared to offer.
