Steve Jones:
Interesting... just checked it out on the map. Looks really close to New York geographically, yet the feel of the place from the movie was really far removed from that.. Was that a fair impression?
It's a very specific town, it used to be the heart of NJ. Before gambling was only licensed to casinos in Atlantic City, Asbury Park was the Vegas of Jersey. Since it was so close to the city it was controlled by Gambinos. They had a boxing rink, casinos lined the board walk; really nice architecture. After the ban, everything died; the 80's brought the crack epidemic and Asbury turned into a shit hole with some great empty buildings. It's a perfect city to use for this movie, it is the perfect depiction of the American dream gone totally fucking wrong. Bruce Springsteen is from Asbury Park. There was (I haven't been there in a while so don't know if it's still opened) a place called "The Stone Pony" it was there for years and years, The Boss played there, Bon Jovi and later on it turned into a punk/hardcore/rave type place; it was NJ's CBGB's.
All the Casion buildings are abandoned and now are hosts to trees and tall grass inside (really cool inside, sort of like a jungle inside of a building haha). The town itself at one point was suppose to get lucky and some investors actually put money into it, but for many reasons they have failed, so there are scores of unfinished buildings and parking lots etc.. it's a seasonal place and the first decent beach on the jersey shore but the town has not much to offer, old buildings, boarded up very poor. Off season it's full of burnt out surfers doing construction etc...
since it's fairly close to nyc, it attracts younger new yorkers, pretty specific crowd.
There are other places along the Jersey shore like Pt. Pleasant, Spring Lakes, Wildwood, but they are all the same and full of drunk, high and obnoxious high school kids from all over the tri state area.
