The first Speedway race was held in the place where now lies Stadion Dziesięciolecia in 1919 as a part of the independence celebrations.

The word "żużel" means; "rushing to victory" in certain Polish dialects. But because it is very difficult to pronounce the word "żużel" for English speaking individuals, the name of the sport is accepted and widely known as: "speedway racing" after '20s.

Although, quote: "The current Champions are Poland (2007)"*, it is a dying sport in Poland, because Formula 1 racer/pilot Robert Kubica and his success caused a sudden drop in the interest of young Poles. Similar interest loss was observed when Adam Małysz couldn't stop flying and landed on an U.S. Navy carrier in the new Millennium celebrations which was held in Sopot. In 2002.
