Temat: The source of knowledge about myself is...

What would you answer? Just few days ago I noticed how many things so deep in me I can see becouse of other people. I think about my children (they made me very, very angry... ;-) but I remember also about many wonderful experiences...
What's the source of knowledge for you? People? Books? Are you conscious of them? What kind of situations tell you more - good or difficult?

I agree with you that other people are the best source of knowledge on ourselves. We tend to see ourselves the way others see us.

"Self-consciousness exists in itself and for itself, in that, and by the fact that it exists for another self-consciousness; that is to say, it is only by being acknowledged or recognized” — (Hegel).

Other sources are our successes or failures, the best and the worst things we have done in life, our relation to God (however we understand it), our tastes, preferences likes and dislikes.

Well, I thought about situations when someone's behaviour tells us (for instance): "I didn't know that I'm able..." but you're wright that WORDS told by others about us make us thinking in the same way.

Successes or failures - what is stronger source of knowledge? What do you think?

I haven't meant WORDS only. Also what is not said and how others behave towards us. We mentally construct our inner picture based on how other people treat us. It is sometimes very subtle like twinkle in eye, respect, seriousness while asking our opinion and on other occasions sneering face expressions and disparaging comments for example.

We should encourage, praise our children, our employees...
So that they are not afraid of trial and error, so that they are confident and not intimidated.

But the reality is quite opposite.
When one succeeds, it is what he/she is supposed to.
If one fails he/she learns it right away, often in public.

If one fails he/she learns it right away, often in public.

So true. Especially in Poland where every failure or criticism is blown out of proportion and praise is a endangered species. Or where asking your superiour, eg. Methodologist or DOS, is seen as a weakness. Question here is: What are they are there for? Hm?

Opposite in Germany: You are praised, but it has no effect. Effort is not valued. Capitalism-Socialism, Semi-communism lead to a one-size-fits-all-mentality, where the state kicks in whenever a big-shot screws up or every small man gets state aid to stay at home and let the grown-ups lead the way.

Or something ;)

Sometimes all he or she wants is to hear occasionaly, "good job".

This is the expression used most often by true leaders.
People will follow them, through hell and back several times.

Answering for the above question seems to be more complicated but of course not impossible. Oscar Wilde defined cynics as people ‘who know the price of everything and the value of nothing' so it is worthwhile to know a bit about ourselves indeed ;)

1. Language - isn't it easy to say a lot about the person only by listening to him/her. What kind of words does he/she use and what are his favourite topics?
2. Books -
3. Environment - our envioronment has enormous impact on our behaviour
4. Broad mindedness
5. Music - tell me what kind of music do you like and I will be able to tell...
6. Food
7. Leisure

I agree that "failures" are stronger in teaching, but I don't agree that best way to learn is having failures.

Personally I have never tried to do "the best thing for me" in my life, but things worked out - that's why I can say I'm happy.
I won't claim I have never failed, but I don't see them. "All for a reason".
There's no way I could fool myself stating that I'm perfect and I achieved everything I wanted, but noone could tell me I achieved this thanks to my failures.
I haven't failed.
I know a lot.
I know fucking a lot.
