Temat: The President of Poland is dead

There was certainly hyseria in the case of Princess Diana just as there is hysteria here.

The main difference is that hyseria here seems to include the inability/ unwillingness to discuss issues.

Anyway, so be it.

I certainly can't be bothered discussing it anymore.

I'm very very sad about the families who lost loved ones.

I'm very very bored of this hypocritical charade concerning the late president.

Bored to death with it.

And in this sense many people have accomplished remarkable things since last Saturday. My hat is off...

Can't agree more.
But I only mean that instead of using a unique chance to show the country's best, they quarrel. I mean average citizens. And of course media, some media will heat this up.

It will not happen again in a history that all these Reuters, BBC, CNN and others are here and they are here for longer than a week. This will not happen twice.
These are not silly discussions which should be presented.

That was my point.

You must be very insecure as a nation to care so much about what you imagine foreigners think of you.

And I wouldn't call this hysteria a typically Polish behaviour. One must just remember the reaction to Princess Diana's death, or, more recently, Michael Jackson.

Probably people cared more about MJ in Poland than in most countries, where he was generally regarded as a figure of ridicule.

Some people went OTT over Diana's death. But not as OTT as is presently the case in Poland. No entertainments were cancelled, no shops shut, and so on. People could take it or leave it as they chose.

And one more thing...

I received a certain amount of criticism recently
for being supposedly disrespectful of the dead.

I'm not.

However, my counter to this is: if you want to be respectful to someone, be respectful to them while they're alive. It's more appreciated by the person in question.

Do not laugh at someone while alive and then elevate that person to the status of martyr/ hero upon their death.

It's hypocritical and utterly pointless.

Indeed. It takes a special kind of talent to transform total nationaly unity into total national division within the space of a few days.

Impressive!

I think it a bit extreme to refer to the funeral as a 'farce'.

However, if anyone wants a caustic comment from myself, it would be that (although it is easy to be wise after the event) the accident was entirely preventable, and that if more attention were paid to health and safety issues, less effort would be wasted on funeral arrangements.

Look after the living not the dead.

Not much can be learned from the accident as accidents just happen. However there are other lessons that Poles already learned. One could be such that misuse of the tragedy does not pay back.Andrzej Pieniazek edytował(a) ten post dnia 18.04.10 o godzinie 12:39

Yes, the simple way to avoid the accident would be not to land there.

I think it a bit extreme to refer to the funeral as a 'farce'.

I'm not thinking about the funeral itself, but the whole thing, from start to finish, the unity, the division, the remarks, the media-attention, the hypocrisy, being able to buy panska skorka in front of the presidential palace, international leaders unable to fly in for the funeral, etc.
It has 'irony' written all over it, and meanders into a farce here and there. Without any attempt of disrespect by me...
Look after the living not the dead.

Which you will see 'how to' in action every November 1st.

Having lived for over 30 years in Germany I would say that Germans are not completely free from this pathos, however German approach is much more "practical" in such situations. Therefore I think that your question is fully justified, because some of this what happened in past few days is hard to explain.

Thanks. Personally I wouldn't like a "total German" approach to such a situation, which I'd find too pragmatical, borderlining cynicism. But I strongly support keeping a cool head in heated situations, because the world doesn't stop turning no matter what happens anywhere.
