People, show your feelings, impress with your sympathy, but don't loose your heads over that. Okay?

You can't expect people not to lose their heads in moments like this. However, it is interesting (as well as worrying) to see that most people's automatic reaction will still be shifted towards remembering the past, nurturing our martyrdom and glorifying the symbols - this is what we've always done throughout the history. It's part of our collective national personality. The circumstances of this tragedy are rather unfortunate, because they will only fuel such thinking. There are certain stages of mourning that have to pass, but I'm afraid that we particularly excel at ruminating about our history, so I'm not looking forward to turning on the TV over the next few weeks.

I was brought up in the naive believe that graduating leaves you not only with more theoretical knowledge, but as well with more knowledge about the world and the human condition.

It's more than worrying. It's actually frightening to see how easily one you know can turn against you in the course of a random incident.
It's part of our collective national personality.

For which you have every right to have.
The circumstances of this tragedy are rather unfortunate, because they will only fuel such thinking.

And which the pigs will use for influencing the masses.

It's not about knowledge, it's all about emotions. Emotions come way before rational thinking.

I don't think it works like this. I guess the church will have some limelight, but in general people aren't 'manipulated' into such reactions, their behaviour is rather spontaneous.

Yes, so far. With so many influencial figures gone, it'll be 'interesting' to see, who and what will come now...

Well... that's where I think lots of people are wrong. Lots of very influential people get fired, some of those who died yesterday didn't have their posts 4 years ago.

What might happen is the opposition gaining political capital from this event, just like Bush did following the 9/11. But let's not talk about it today.

Why the sudden 'love' for a president who was disliked and hated by 2/3 or the population? Death (by accident or not) is not an achievement.

Have you ever seen a sleeping person?..
Other than Sylwia being right on her message, there's one more thing we may miss during this discussion...

Politicians are constantly pounded by the opposition and media... and sometimes it is not possible to see nice little things about them. We just see the bad sides.

Now I don't mean this or that was a good president/politician, what I'm saying is, just shut up Bernd (OK, kidding again. But please, try to get your human feelings back please :).

There were little things that I didn't like how officials handled this homecoming of the body.

I've felt like screaming:

WHAT THE FUCK IS "EXITUS"???!!!

Couldn't you AT LEAST cover the company name on that funeral car?!!

I got angry, although I'm not even half-Polish.

This is the body of THE PRESIDENT of the COUNTRY!
Do you send him with a Taxi or a Coca-Cola pickup to abroad?
Why the hell couldn't you find something... you don't know that this thing is televised?

Another thing... keeping the coffin at the airport, for a bloody MP parade.
It's OK for his daughter and brother... but why the hell should this poor body has to wait there more?
If you want it to be televised, take him to the palace first!
Zillions of people, waiting their turns to insencerely show their assumed respects (I'm still talking about the airport. More than a hundred people were waiting their turns to get to their knees. As if it was the proper place for doing that)...

Sorry for venting. I had to take it out of my system.İlter K. edytował(a) ten post dnia 12.04.10 o godzinie 17:15

You just love saying that :P
Be thankful I give you reasons to do so ;)
OK, kidding again.

Please, no. :)
But please, try to get your human feelings back please :).

Human feelings? I could say I'm German. But I won't. Instead I will say:
- my feelings and my inner believes have nothing to do in a public forum. I'm here to discuss, share knowledge, get to know people, have fun. Want me to post pictures of me crying from yesterday? How pathetic is that?

- Did you go to the presidential palace? I did. Did you see the tv show yesterday? I did. Did you see anyone cry? I sure didn't. I saw people smiling, waving into cameras, taking tons of pictures. For most of them it was a happening. And that's all it was for the mojority (in Warsaw).

Most of the people I saw today in the streets and on public transportation went about their days. Only few of them read newspapers or were somehow paying attention to the Metro news and other stuff. I didn't even hear anyone talking about it.

So, dear internatinoal press, where did YOU find a country in shock and moarning?

Bernd, you exaggerate a little.
Yesterday at work it was the topic of the day for my colleagues (a lot of them were even in black): it's normal ...these victims were Polish people ! And I'm not talking about their function (as a President or a general,...) but as human beings with their own family and friends.
Of course they didn't cry but it's a catastrophe !

I think the media exaggerates, especially the German one.

Well, as I said, I didn't see people wearing black or ribbons, not were I was working, not on the streets. That in the offices they spoke about it is obvious. In all of my classes we spoke about it. Everybody agrees it's tragic but nobody is really sad.
Of course they didn't cry but it's a catastrophe !

It is. I'm merely talking about the gathering in front of the presidential palace in Warsaw and the onlookers of the motorcade.

Fair point. Sorry, I forgot to write "believes (religious)". Not believes in the sense of what I morally think is right or wrong.

What do you mean by "really sad"? can you measure sadness?

I didn't light a candle, I didn't join any gathering, I didn't wear black. But still, I'm somewhat sad. No idea why, I didn't like the president and never was in favour of PiS. Nevertheless, I feel pity for all of them, regardless of the political faction. The fact that a lot of young ppl died (e.g. the crew) makes me even more upset.

I did join the gathering. And I feel the same, but that doesn't verify IMHO:
- for the press to write that the whole country is in shock, people are crying, kneeling down in the street, praying, singing national songs, etc.
- for people to be agressive towards those who don't join certain facebook groups

ok, so in that sense I agree with you. All these facebook groups (I heard of a one called "pokolenie tu-154", can you believe it?!) are ridiculous and pointless in my opinion. What purposes do they serve? It's like showing off, hey I'm sad, let's light a candle [*] and change our profile pictures. But maybe I'm wrong, everyone has the right to express their feelings in preferable ways.

Yeah, it is the usual mass hysteria - same JPII story redux. Im under the impression that people cannot separate the respect for the fallen from the rather poor quality of the late president's term. It is the cynic in me but I'll bet a bottle of a decent Bushmills that most of that fake "United We Stand", "No (political) fighting for ever", "We shall be as one happy family" that are bordering on being ridiculous won't last a month.Marcin B. edytował(a) ten post dnia 13.04.10 o godzinie 10:33

If I could draw conclusion of the talks I'm just having with some people and of my observations yesterday, it didn't last a day.
