I learned from someone who works in the air traffic, that Smolensk is:

a) a dangerous airport, as with fog it's impossible to land there
b) that it's not fit for big machines
c) usually planes go to Minsk

So, why the bloody hell did they want to land there?

PS: On the internet the plane is called "tropolev"

It happened once, or a few times I guess, that Lech Kaczyński made a direct order to the pilot against his own opinion. The pilot made three attempts to touchdown. There are rumors now that before the last attempt, there was an emergency fuel purge as if the pilot knew that something may go wrong.

So. I am sorry to say that. If it comes true, what kind of situation whas that? Surely it is not normall that pilot dumps fuel before landing. Polish media are not showing anything but praying people with no sign of explanatory facts.

A good pilot does that in preparation for an emergency/crash landing.
Polish media are not showing anything but praying people with no sign of explanatory facts.
They will share share the facts with you and the world as soon as the facts are known.

Two years ago 20 senior chiefs of Polish Air Forces died in a plane crash as they were travelling back from a conference altogether.
Has anybody learnt a lesson?
How come they put almost 100 state, military and church officials on ONE aircraft???? :(

Actually you're wrong. My husband worked at Okęcie and said that every plane dumps fuel before landing because of safety. In Warsaw area they do that close to Puszcza Kampinowska and Las Kabacki.

We can try to guess but there was some news that Jadwiga Kaczyńska didn't feel well and Kaczyński wanted to spend in Russia as little time as possible.

It always happens when the landing weight is exceeded. Normally, at the destination point, the plane has some portion of fuel left for eventual flight to the alternative destination. In this case the pilot made one try without fuel dump, then the Russians ordered him not to land at all. The pilot ignored the russian flight control and made two more attempts. I suspect that before the final one, there was some try to dump the fuel leftovers. The captain was very determined then to land at all cost. The final cost.

We can only imagine how devastating it may be for an elderly lady who has recently been hospitalised because of her cardiac problems :(
