Temat: The Dice Man and Random Events

People often ask me why I'm in Poland and I often get tired of the question. It's one of those things you get asked daily and .. you know what I mean .... I find myself making up various smart remarks like "I was in Berlin one weekend and got lost..."

The truth is this: I came here entirely at random. I let fate decide. Almost like the throwing of a dice.

Anyone else out there let the dice decide?

I came here more or less at random.

Just answered an ad for teachers in 'the Guardian'.

I presume you've read, 'the Dice Man'?

And heard the eponymous song by the Fall?

Ha, you're not wrong Steve. In fact so long as you're not in a 9-5 rut type situation (heaven forbid!), I think the majority of life's set by that little spinning number flasher.

My own entrance to this great land was planned, but only a couple of days beforehand but staying here longer than the intended 2 or 3 days (back in 1994) was the dice man's doing.

Sliding Doors and all that, changing fortunes. Hey we're talking like Grandads here! I'm only just fairly recently a Dad .... there's another topic altogether. I should get myself registered in some forums and start some topics about bringing up bilingual kids. Once I've found myself a plump little job that is :-)

I'll be back

Hi Ian and welcome.

Perhaps you would like to introduce yourself on the welcome and introductions thread.

Please start a topic on bringing up bilingual kids.

How did you find us?

Yeah - I'm a fan of that song by The Fall from the Dragnet album.

I was once a little fascinated by The Dice Man and even had a website dedicated to it, which unfortunately is no longer in existence because I forgot to pay the next instalment for the domain... The idea behind the site was to provide people with a way out for difficult decisions. There were loads of articles about decision making and some "diceman" tools. You could type in your dilemma and then some choices which you could imagine yourself doing. You then clicked on a button which rolled the dice and chose the decision for you. The rules were that you'd have to actually do what the dice told you to. I think it was quite good but it never really caught on...
