Temat: The Church of England

The Church of England will tomorrow officially apologise to Charles Darwin for misunderstanding his theory of evolution.

One photo and the quote under it grabbed my attention most:
Ann Widdecombe: "We've already apologised for slavery and the Crusades. When is it all going to stop?"
hehe.

Well, if you don't read carefully, you could mess more or less everything up, I guess.

Anne Widdecome has (though I hate to say it) a point.

Slavery wasn't invented by white people (who did NOT have to go capture people from the jungle - they had already been enslaved, chained, and delivered for sale by their own people). Not that that excuses it, though it does suggest that the blame factor isn't quite clear cut. Worth remembering that Britain was among the first countries to fight slavery. Nor were the Christian Crusaders the only bad guys in that particular conflict. The Saracens were invaders too - their home was NOT the holy land and they had no more or less right to be there than the crusaders. I don't see their descendants apologising for much.

And as for the C of E (why do people still care two hoots what they say? Maybe they don't) they were probably more receptive of Darwin than most religious bodies at the time. The RC church (Widdecombe's own religion) and countless hand-clapping god-botherers of the protestant persuasion still don't accept Darwinism.

Remember that Darwin was a C of E priest - it seems they are in any case apologising to one of their own.

Thank you Jon, it is something new for me.

So why to apologize now?
Do you think the latest (?) achievements (!) in technology is causing some movements from the church to put the church into a better light? I mean, what could those steps bring?

Really, there was such a haemorrage from the C of E during the 20th century that it's become a bit of a special-interest group. Their churches are empty, they can't find priests, their 'people base' has moved abroad, mainly to Africa.

I suspect the decline is irreversible, though if they actually stopped apologising for everything and developed some teeth, people would probably respect them more.

I just checked it up on wikipedia. Apparently he lost his faith after his daughter died in 1851 and ceased to take church services but continued with pastoral work without becoming laicised.

I wasn't sure myself - I knew he had doubts. If I understand correctly, ordination was an essential requirement for university teachers at that time, though many packed it in as soon as convenient.Jon M. edytował(a) ten post dnia 16.09.08 o godzinie 18:27

I've recently learnt that Leonardo da Vinci didn't have the formal education (he learnt things by himself, reading and observing) and historians think that explains his 'free mind'.

I bet it was very difficult at those times for a middle class kid to learn/study without feeling the church up ahead their brains.
