Temat: Teachers behaving badly....

According to Britain's General Teaching Council:

Teachers must behave as pillars of the community and be role models to their pupils, the industry’s professional body said yesterday.

Those who drink heavily and disgrace themselves - even outside school hours – face disciplinary action for bringing the profession into disrepute, whether or not they have broken the law. Some teachers have had to undergo counselling or provide medical proof of abstinence from alcohol to remain on the teaching register...

Don't teachers have the right to let their hair down?????

Well I tell you what. When students see their teachers behaving like that, they lose all respect (if they ever had any). I hated it when I bumped into a student (teenage or adult) in a bar or club, but mostly because I wanted to have some sort of privacy. I never drink excessively, so that wasn't really a problem.

A bit stiff those Brits, eh?

I remember whenever we met a teacher at a party, during my high-school time, they'd buy us a beer or we them :) Not to mention the drinking-competitions during our final school trip to England. The teachers came by every evening to visit every trailer (7 or 8 total) and drink whatever the pupils would have: Wine, beer, vodka, liquer, etc. and then head into theirs and kill bottle of "Southern Comfort"; every evening for six days!

A couple of weeks ago I had a party and two students of mine tried to get me drunk. They had fun :)

But seriously, a public figure has to apply to different rules than a private person. Although with PC and other modern misunderstandings people tend to expect a lot from certain social groups without applying similar or other rules to themselves.

While in 8th grade my middle school class went up to Szklarska Poreba... first night, we got pretty damn sloppy, drinking cheap wine together with our teacher. We did not lose an oz. of respect for her, quite the contrary.

I'm quite surprised about that actually Raf.

To me teachers can't be "the cool dudes you hang out with". I strongly believe there should be some distance between them and their pupils.

Of course I'm not talking about teachers/trainers at courses for adults.

The tricky bit is to know where to draw the line. When does a pupil (kid) become an adult? End of elementary school? End of high school? Half way through university?

I'm quite surprised about that actually Raf.

We had a long history with her, she was an excellent teacher, and she was also our guidance counselor (wychowawczyni). She stood up for our class on so many occasions (we were a bit of a problematic bunch). On top of that, she was one of those teachers who'd stay after school to help with whatever you needed, come to your house and talk to your parents about issues you are experiencing in whatever subject you may be having problems with and would intervene if she'd know that there were problems on the home front. She used to hold tutoring at her place for free for any of her students. I actually saw her in November (made a point of doing so) while visiting, she is now teaching at a priv. Uni. Still just as amazing.

yes, I had a chance to go on a school trip with 17 and 18 year olds and I was 24 I think (they weren't my students, but my friend's students)
wouldn't recommend it to anyone

It is very different. I think I've never been able to get used to it and this is why I've stopped teaching kids/teens. When I taught at gimazjum things were safe since I commuted to a place 25 kms away from my hometown.

Though yes, this is a valid point and I'll have to bear it in mind when going out and getting drunk.

I remember a time when 3 of us from school went out to the pub and, for some reason, one of my mates invited along Mr Curtis, the Geography teacher...

To cut a long story short, we all ended up back at his place and he was well steamed, got the brandy out and the last thing I remember clearly from the evening is him appearing from his bathroom in his underpants, having just puked up over his trousers.

I never saw Mr Curtis again after that, which is perhaps why I look upon the evening as a bit of a laugh and him as a bloke, a human being who gets pissed like the rest of us... I'd just left school then. I guess it would have been a bit awkward if he's had to teach us geography on Monday morning, though!

You know Steve, a very similar story happened at my high school in a parallel class, and then was repeated a couple of years in a row.

Everybody seemed to be having a lot of fun until last year (if I remember correctly) when the shit hit the fan: the teacher turned out to be gay and he was repeatedly abusing of his students.

The story was all over the news (mainly local, but I remember reading about it in a nationwide available newspaper).

I'm in the same boat with you. Of course they ought to let their hair down. It's hard to think of a group of people who deserve it more. But it seems like the nature of the relationship between young students and teachers hangin' out doesn't mix well, in general, like oil and water. Maybe my own mind is a just a little closed about it for whatever reason.Joj Y. edytował(a) ten post dnia 22.12.08 o godzinie 19:46

Exactly my thoughts, Joj.

Not so long ago (2006) in my town there was this scandal with a young English teacher who was so cool to drink % and smoke pot with her students. Obviously someone videod it and it was used as evidence against her.
The punishment was so severe (prison sentence and complete suspension of professional qualifications I think)

Nobody sane would risk such a thing nowadays I guess.

They would, in Italy.

Just before this summer a teacher was caught on video (friggin cell phones :S) while smoking "something" in the teachers' lounge.

They never found out what that "something" was, but the teacher was suspended and then (memory gap here) also fired.

The thing is that when something goes wrong in a state school you have everybody against you: other teachers (older, wiser, more experienced, blah blah blah), school directors, students and PARENTS who can go very far to protect their kids even if it's obvious that the kids are a problem in itself. Plus everybody lies.
