I believe the hate campaign against the referee, Howard Webb, who officiated in the game Austria v Poland, to be exaggerated and unfair, and damaging to Poland's reputation abroad.

I partly agree.
I think what happened in fact constitutes the beauty of soccer - unpredictability. I am ashamed of the hate videos, pics etc. which have appeared in the internet and mr. Tusk's words as well. I think we have some reasons to be unhappy, yet we should not show as much hate as a nation as we seem to. We just need some understanding now.
Cheers.

For anyone who believes the decision to be scandalous, please watch the video and listen to the comments.

They refer to Webb's decision as a 'gutsy call'.

It is only in Poland that people believe otherwise.

Why don't we support Urs Meier and Anders Frisk first??

Temat: Support Howard Webb:

Because this isn't relevant to the discussion.

If English supporters behaved disgracefully to these referees, and I don't doubt that they did, then they should have been supported too.

But we are talking about what is happening NOW and this is an absolute disgrace.

Saying you did it too is no argument.

Warren, I think we Poles went mad for one reason only. IMHO, nobody would have questioned his decision if it had been taken at a different stage of the match. Someone said the referee noticed similar cases earlier in the match so why didn't he order a penalty kick then? You just don't do such things in the very last minute. Well, unless it is something very serious , of course.Did that what Lewandowski did really look like any major offence at this stage of the game? Besides, UEFA, or whatever their name is, should have dispelled all the doubts seconds after the match.
You must agree that if that happened to England you would be
equally furious.
I do not support the anti-referee campaign - what for? That would be below me.

One more thing. Experts say (unfortunately I didn't watch the match as I suffered from a horrible attack of migraine for a few days) trying to shut Polish mouths up that if the referee had really been "anti-Polish",he could have refused to approve of the only goal they won. The question arises in this connection - which of his decisions taken during the match were right and which were only 50% right? At such an advanced stage the decisions should be only right, shouldn't they? Too much money and too many football lovers (as well as one-time fans) are involved.

Another separate story is that there is too much politics in sport in Poland. Our winning has become the question of 'to be or not to be" for some and hence now the emotions reach the sky.

In conclusion, I'd like to say that what we need very urgently is another Górski and a team of young talented football players.Wendy Tweed edytował(a) ten post dnia 15.06.08 o godzinie 16:52

Even if the referee made a mistake, this doesn't justify any kind of insult to his private life. That doesn't justify a hate campaign.
And the thing happening, is not good for Poland. It shouldn't be attached to the character of whole Polish nation. This is not you, or I want to believe this is not you.

Do you really think we all do nothing but sit and plan our revenge on Mr W.? I have just returned from work and I know that not even one of my nearly 100 colleagues even mentioned his name. There are people and people everywhere - you know the story, don't you?

Wendy, are you saying that what we're seeing about the poor referee is normal? Have you seen any products of this frustration on the web, for example? And the scale of it?

No, to be honest I haven't seen anything apart from the clip from the game attached by Warren. I just don't follow it.
So where are the football authorities? Personal threats are against the law in Poland and should be dealt with by the police.

Isn't it time for new football regulations : anonymous referees wearing masks during matches? :)

I'm not promoting this, but have a look (Warren, please remove it if it's not ok)

It was created immediately after the match and distributed on the net . I was terrified.

Thanks, Lidia. It's disgraceful really, to say the very very least. Couldn't finish reading it.
But as I said, it's definitely something for the police to deal with immediately. People like you or I would never have produced anything like that.
The level of hatred has reached something beyond human comprehension.

Lidia, I swear I was totally unaware of what was going on.

Wendy :) it's alright :)

We've already covered it here a little
http://www.goldenline.pl/forum/anglosphere/387470
and in another thread, too.

(I'm no football fan so I should be quiet but I use nasza-klasa a lot and this is where I'd realized the massive scale of the phenomenon)
The above linked sites are only examples, I'm not digging into them any more and I feel shame.

I'll read through the forum later in the evening (still tons of tests to mark for tomorrow, the last day of summer term!).
At first I couldn't understand why Warren was digging into the problem - now I understand. Terrifying to know one lives also among such people.Wendy Tweed edytował(a) ten post dnia 15.06.08 o godzinie 17:57

That's the point Wendy.

Either the decision is right or wrong.

It doesn't depend what stage the match is in, or what's at stake.
You must agree that if that happened to England you would be
equally furious.

I don't think I would be.

Especially after a few days reflection.

I don't understand this point.

Referees are only human. They only have one pair of eyes. They don't have the opportunity to replay incidents on the television monitor.

Besides which, according to non-Polish observers, the penalty decision was perfectly correct.

That's why I'm so angry.

I googled Webb's name on youtube to see the incident again for myself and came across literally hundreds of hate videos.

Then I heard the Polish president say he wanted to kill Webb.

Then I go to the pilka nożna forum, and see apparently educated professional people, writing with the intelligence and objectivity of twelve year olds ......
