First of all, I'll make two distinctions:

1. Viagra from only 2 Canadian dollars... Enlarge your love rod .. make her happy... lick my love pump

2. Other adverts

This posting refers to point 2. Point 1 is clearly a pain in the arse and I think we know the difference between point 1 and point 2.

Now then, Spam (I'm talking about point 2) gets a bad press. However, think about it. It's low cost advertising. Think about how much money is spent on marketing a product normally - tv commercials, magazine ads etc... Millions and millions... Who pays the price? The consumers. The advertising cost is factored into the cost of the product. Question: would we prefer to pay less for the products we buy if the producers were able to market them at low cost? I'll give you a concrete example. If I were able to rely entirely on low cost advertising such as "spam" (which everyone hates) the cost of a language course at my school could drop by aproximately 60zl per year. Would people rather save this money? Or would they rather splash out the extra 60zl and be bothered by paid forms of advertising such as leaflet drops and poster campaigns? At least they would be spared the trouble of deleting a message from the inbox. 60zl well spent, clearly.

Or perhaps there are other, cleverer ways to market a product without spending large sums of money...

Я думаю, что это очењ хорошая идэа ;)

Trouble is, 60 zl isn't that much to be saved within a year. Also, how much of your revenue would actually come from spam? I mean, if it really was that cost effective, there would be no need for traditional advertising. Then, after a while, everyone would start doing it and your brain would explode from information overload. Or the market would collapse (just hypothesizing).

I'd rather spend the 60 zl on stopping spam ever hitting my mailbox door (dream on...)Sylwia Łubkowska edytował(a) ten post dnia 15.07.08 o godzinie 01:50

But you'd save 60zl on many products, not just English classes.

I don't think that it'd work though as you'd have to have every billboard, TV/magazine/newspaper advert, sponsored event, product placement, etc. etc. coming into your inbox.

Besides, we'd then have to pay more for our TV/magazines/newspapers, events, etc. etc.

I don't mind ads in my mailbox, as long as they are ads for products. What I hate is piles of paper strewn across the entrance to my building and scattered on the stairs while there's a huge box nailed next to the front door, designed just for putting ads in. Gaaah!
As for internet ads, same story - I understand the necessity to market things, and if I don't want to watch ads, I either switch to a different service or install an ad block.
After all, GL is also so much about clever marketing (products and people).

I think we're onto sth here: clever marketing. Clever marketing is low cost and high impact. How? GL is one way of doing it... you get your profile and that of your company "out there". However, try and stick a blatant advert in a forum and you'll be roundly despised as a Spammer despite the fact that you may be offering a viable and useful product and ultimately saving the customer money by chosing a low cost way of advertising. However, this argument won't wash: there's a knee-jerk reaction against "spam" and that's that. And, I suppose, I see the point: forums would be very dull indeed if they were full of ads.

So, if you crazy kids out there are interested in marketing, what ways can you think of for low cost/ high impact/ low annoyance advertising?

We tattoo the name and logo of our school on every teacher and student. They complain at first, but when we point out that it's in the small print of the contract, they laugh at their own folly for not reading it carefully, and at how life can be quirky!

hank you, Tatiana, for the first time in a long, long time, I laughed out loud. Unfortunately, my latest diet was a failure, and I celebrated with triple-chocolate chocolate chip cookies, so now it says selOect :-(

Now you've made me feel guilty because of the "brown cake". No pun intended ;)
