you know what - it's not about the rose. It can be parsley or a twig or whatever else as long as it is given to you outta love. Who cares if it's a cliche, does it really matter if it's just one rose? Would you feel more loved if someone gave you a bunch of 50 roses or an egg-sized diamond? Would a bead on a cord be not enough? What I'm saying is that these are just things. It's the context that matters.

Aha. We're all human beings and we have feelings. Jealousy is a natural feeling. When we don't have anyone who would give us a bunch of flowers or a card on that day seeing thousands of couples holding hands as they pass by will only painfully reminds us of our loneliness. The more we claim Valentine's Day doesn't matter to us, the more it probably does matter deep down. I said probably, because one might hate it for all kinds of other reasons like things may go pear shaped for too much effort, there may be less spontaneity or you may genuinely dislike customs, holidays etc. forcing you to go with the crowd doing certain things on a certain day.If you are in a relationship, you can say: let's take it easy today and celebrate some other time when we feel like it more. But single people can't even say that, there will be no party for them whether they like it or not, and they must feel somewhat excluded. Some say it doesn't bother them but I personally think one has to be made of stone to feel indifferent.
I've been on both sides and I definitely like St. V's day, for as long as my relationship is doing well. It's another excuse for making a special effort, getting indulgent, doing what we wouldn't do on a normal day. In fact, I think the only downside of it is that so many people celebrate at once, show off their happiness and are generally very loud about it that those who can't celebrate will notice it. And there will always be such people. I think individual anniversaries are much better in this respect.
