I'm on vacation. Have four women next door. They drink like fish, but can't keep as quiet. Had to go complain to the owners and ask them to call the police.
At home, no. Apart from a VERY nosy neighbor who spends his days sat on a bench in front of the building.

The guy downstairs is pissed every night. Which is okay - but sometimes in his pissedness he amps up his guitar and lets rip when he comes back from the pub at 1 am.

At the moment I'm OK, though I'm very sensitive to noise. My neighbours below sometimes speak loudly during the middle of the night, but usually the most they give me is the church service on TV at 7.00am.
I have earplugs.

I left the flat I was renting as there was an old drunk who used to sing/moan for hours on end. At first I thought it was a terminally ill guy as it really did sound like someone moaning in pain.

I left the previous place as there was a psycho toddler who would scream and scream in a blood-curdling kind of way during the middle of the night.

Previous place, in France, despite the legal obligation to put sound insulation on the floor whilst renovating, they just put something thin, so I used to have elephant footsteps at all times of day, particularly when I wanted to sleep.

These are generally minor compared to the scum some people have to suffer, but when you like peace and quiet, particularly at night, then it seems like an enormous problem.

I used to have a very old neighbor who had diabetes and a condition that put him to sleep at odd moments. He once flooded my apartment as felt sleepy whilst shaving and went straight to bed, leaving the tap on. I instantly imagined him heating up soup on the gas stove and sold the apartment as soon as possible.
Oh, and the neighbors opposite smoked like chimneys and every time they opened the door to their apartment, I had to use an anti-tobacco air freshener in mine, and the hall. Beat this.
I also lived across the street from a church in Poland (like now) and the bells would wake me up every single Sunday, 6 or 7 am. Never got used to them; now they seem to be quieter or my hearing has gone worse...
Oh lovely, the ladies next door must be having a major hangover. Nice punishment, but why do they have to puke so loudly?

OMG!!!! The group is not English at all!!! It is Polish!!! Only in Eastern Countries we can retell everything about neighbours, knowing all their lives ;) .
I don't like the noise myself, or to make the noise when its more than 23:00.
When I studied in Russia there was a neighbour above me who played every morning dance music (I remember Scooter;) ) :))
Also in Russia one neighbour , a woman who was 32 or 33 had 7 y.o. daughter. this neighbour drank alot, the child went to bed at 00:00, and this woman went to drink with men on the bench or to somebody's home! Sucha pity of this little girl life : I always controlled her homework, asked if she wants to eat (her mother couldn't leave smth fom food for her sometimes).But the girl is very smart, learns everything very fast, learns at school perfectly.And this mother called sometimes me to be a nurse in the weekend :))) like: Oleg, are you free for today to check if everything all right with my daughter? :)) Everything would be ok if this woman won't drink and hang out/change men...Oleg Kholyuchenko edytował(a) ten post dnia 17.07.08 o godzinie 08:07

My neighbours are a bit loud with 2 kids, but I don't notice it especially on winters because houses are apart, and there are 2 gardens in between.
When I lived in an apartment in the city, I used to hear the arguments between the mother and his son downstairs. I think it was very typical, and it never happened in the middle of the night, I wasn't seriously disturbed.

These are elderly people who go to sleep at about 7 p.m. and get up at 4 a.m. From time to time they play very loud Bavarian music from 5 a.m. That's always the same tape (no, not CD but a tape :))). Their stereo is situated on a balcony - so the tune is heard in a neghbourhood. The first song starts with words "Hallo, Guten Morgen Deutschland" :))). They like to listen to this especially on weekends.

My upstairs neighbours (ultra-respectable old lady and her bachelor son, quite affluent, maybe even rich) deny there's any problem in their flat. But they're lying. There are three huge stains on my ceiling, all of them growing, one of them black with fungus. And the building's administration say it isn't from pipes and must be from above. And the people upstairs are being very evasive..

But in the place I lived in before, on al. Waszyngtona, I once opened the door and found one of the neighbours lying dead on the doorstep.

I had a hangover at the time, but seriously, for just a moment, thought the cat had brought it to me as a present.

Like Steve H I really suffer from the noise of others.

However, it's not so bad where I live.

Problems:

Next to my school lives a mentally unstable alcoholic. On two occasions he cut the wires to the domophone. He also threatens to kill me, and when the mood takes him, pisses all over the klatka.

Below my flat lives another alcoholic. His girlfriend stabbed him and was sent to prison. The evidence of this was a bloodbath in the klatka.

I have other problems where I live, but those are the most serious.

Fortunately, both in the school and where I live the scum are gradually being moved out as they are in a redevelopment area :)

I have no sympathy or time for alcoholics.

Here goes:

1. A guy who used to live next door was a drug dealer. The police would come once a month to ask about him and the people he was hanging out with. The funny thing was he never gave us a hard time, was - well let's say - polite, would always be the first to say "Hi, how are you doing?". I guess all normal stuff if you want's to keep a low profile. The same can't be said about his mates and "clients", though. He's been missing for 2 years now. I saw him about a year ago drinking coffee in a bar. He said hi, I said hi, we parted ways.

2. An old guy (terminally ill, cancer) that lived above us would sleep during the day and when all regular people were getting ready to turn in, all of the sudden he would swich on the TV (he was half deaf), walk around place wearing heavy shoes/boots, he had those really bad cough attacks, that would last for 5-10 minutes (of course always after 2 am!). A couple of times a firefighers squad had to break into his place.

The first time it was because someone had been trying to contact him for a couple of days without any luck (turned out he had taken a shitload of sleeping pills).

The second time was a memorable event! It was when the guy was basically half dead, as in he didn't control his body anymore (and yet the social/health services didn't do shit to help him, or us!). Anyway, one night at 4 am my wife wakes me up and says she hears water dropping, presumably I left the tap open somewhere. I get up to check it out and what do I find out? That we're being flooded by that &%$£%&. I go out to wake him up and ask him to close the water, I keep knocking on his door but he won't asnwer. So I call the FF brigade. They get there after 10 minutes, somehow wake the guy up, convince him to open the door and let them in. As the door opens I see the firefighers' faces turn green then pale. The enxt thing I smell is am unholy stench. Makes me wanna vomit. I ask the guys what the smell, and they tell me that not only did he forget to close the water, but he's also been pissing and crapping into the bathtub for some time!

I had to disinfect and repaint walls in 2 rooms and the bathroom in the place I rent.

Well, about my neighbours above:
Once I thought it was running water from the tap in the bathroom... I went to see - the tap was closed.
I saw the toilet.. water was dropping on one side of it. I came up the stairs o the floor above. The neighbourd even didnt know what it is. I told them to check the bathrom and the toilet, esp. walls. It were walls... Floor above the same thing, but already not dropping, but running water.Floor above... I knocked at the door. the gurl was staring at computer... and thought about washing in washing mashin. I told to check the bathroom... and the tube with water from washing machine to the bath was lying on the floor instead in the bath. And the floor of her was flooded.. and washingmashine was on. Good I had no electricity shock/hit from turning off the wet wire and socket from washing mashine!!!

also I remember in my childhoood "rain in the room". It was actually the big tube kinda exploded 4 floors above...

A elderly mentally unstable lady used to report us to the local police station (it was a rented flat) and the police would come regularly to check on us. It was just my (girl) friend and I, living a quiet life. They said they have to arrive, i.e. react because they were getting her reports. The first visit was a surprise, the next ones just routine.
It wasn't a typical student apartment, we were both working, with little social life.

heh.. yea.. I feel the same. I've been lucky thus far. First year of marriage we moved to an apt. building with a nice balcony. Unfortunately every time we'd go out and hang out, this white thrash tie-dye wearing 200lbs monstrosity would come outside and tell us to "shut the fuck up" or each time one of us would laugh, she'd cackle from the inside of her house. She called the cops on us on New Years Eve, the police officer actually apologized for showing up and bothering us, she called again and again until cops ended up going into her apt. to inquire what the problem is, to find drugs on her living room table.
