Temat: Nigerian scam 419 - is it possible to win this battle?
No exactly a scam, but here goes...
Today I had a phone call from the assistant of a financial advisor wanting to meet me.
They look for names of ex-pats on the internet then assume that the ex-pats are rich (as people on GL frequently do to) and assume that they need advice on where to place their money, how to invest, etc.
So, first of all I say to the lady that I'm 100% not resident in the UK so I don't need advice on the tax planning in the UK.
No problem but you may still need pension advice
I then say that I have a tiny salary anyway
Again no problem (she thinks I'm being modest)
I then say that I'm leaving my job in 2 weeks and so might not have a salary soon.
Again she insists on making an appointment.
So, I agreed, knowing that I wouldn't sign anything nor spend any money. I'd simply waste the guy's time by making him come to my workplace at 18.00
However, I then realise that I'll be waisting MY time by staying at the office until 18.00.
So, I'll ring back tomorrow to cancel and see whether it takes (a) me to repeat myself 5 times, or (b) me telling the lady to fuck off and leave me alone, for her to finally to agree to cancel the appointment.
I say it isn't a scam, but in the end you pay these people management fees and then they invest your money in someting that might lose value or at least not beat the market. i.e. you pay for mediocrity.
In my opinion you are better doing your own homework (including speaking to the tax authorities yourself) rather than filling the pockets of these generally uneducated spivs who only know how to earn commisssion.
