Why do they have the tricolour flag if so many people don't like it. Why not have their cross?

And that is exactly why I posted "The Red Hand of Ulster" banner before :) It is sort of both Irish and British and everyone is happy ;)

Unfortunately, in Ireland you have a 'zero-sum game'. A victory for one side is a defeat for the other.

Thus the tricolour represents the nationalist/republican tradition, the Union Jack the unionist one.

Republicans will claim their flag is inclusive as it supposedly represents orange for unionists, green for nationalists and white for peace. Unionists don't accept this.

The cross of Saint Patrick is regarded as a 'neutral' symbol, and is used by the Irish rugby team in away matches, both unionists and nationalists on St Patrick's Day parades in Northern Ireland, the Church of Ireland, and some medical bodies that are organised on an all-Ireland basis.

It could be said that by opting for independence from the U.K., the Republic of Ireland left the Anglosphere of its own volition.

This is worth a thread to itself.

Another idea was to lump a few semi-neutral things together like in this PSNI emblem:

Obrazek

I think it too much of "let's make everyone forget the RUC and love the reborn sectarian-free PSNI" approach but I reckon the emblem isn't too bad.

Note the PSNI has St Patrick's saltaire in the middle as a 'shared' symbol.warren whitmore edytował(a) ten post dnia 09.02.08 o godzinie 11:42

I'm going to start a new thread on Ireland.

Maybe Marcin, you would like to comment first.

As a Pole living in Northern Ireland, and therefore neutral, I'd be interested to hear your opinions about the interminable Unionist/Nationalist zero-sum game.

Sure - I will post some observations later today.

My first impression when I arrived here was that this was no zero-sum game anymore. The example of PSNI is just one case of change from black-and-white situation to a more nuanced reality with more shades of grey.

St. Patrick's flag is the flag of St. Patrick, not the flag of Ireland. It's possible that at the time of the tricolour's inception, this distinction was more important, and deference was givento the Saint. The tricolour was chosen to represent the peace (white) that could exist between the green of traditional Ireland and the Orange representing Protestant settlers. It was used by Nationalists since the mid-19th century, but only started to be considered the flag of Ireland since used by Liam Neeson and Alan Rickman in 1916.
The flag of St. George, with the red hand of Ulster and the Crown, is seen as quite inflamitory "down south", suggesting that Norn Iron is out on its own, and not part of Ireland, republic or otherwise. These are my observations, and may be a little coloured, but hey, you should hear some of the people I grew up with!

Thanks for putting it in terms that we'd all understand ;)
But about Mr Rickman. Did he start learning about the dark arts of
magic before his involvement in Ireland or afterwards?Steven H. edytował(a) ten post dnia 11.02.08 o godzinie 12:09

Ever since he tried to have Mary Elizabeth Mastrantarantino. Luckily he was foiled by Robin Prince of Thieves, and Christian Slater.
