I wanted to be pedantic and ask why country x, y or z wasn't incorporated. However, I can't actually come up with any.We have the US and Canada, the UK and something for Australia and New Zealand. Are there any countries missing?
Ireland is an obvious choice, but given that they have their own unique language as well, I think it is fair that they are excluded. Any others?
I'm sure that Warren had all bases covered anyway.

I have heard that China has such a huge population - that CHINA has the most speakers of English, by far, in the world. That's kind of a trick statistic, though. So we're 'diss'ing China.Joj Y. edytował(a) ten post dnia 07.02.08 o godzinie 14:12konto usunięte

Great! Though... I haven't met many of these English speakers. :S And I hate those proud [Chinese] who speak very poor English and think they are gods at the same time looking down at me and my Chinese when I try to do my best. Frustrating.

Well, Gaelic is spoken by about 5% of the population here. It's taught in school and while you might not come across it here in Dublin, there are plenty of Gaeilc speaking settlements, villages and town in the west of Ireland. But learning this language is as hard as Chinese, believe me.
I would add Ireland though to the group emblema - just be careful while placing a nice harp logo. Depending on the side of the higher harp edge, you will get symbol of Ireland or Guinness sign. ;-)Michal Rogowski edytował(a) ten post dnia 07.02.08 o godzinie 15:32

(this is in reference to Kasia's post. Michał and I were posting at the same time but he's faster) :)Oh! That's Right! I could have asked you about that statistical claim here in this thread. Of course, I saw you earlier but it's still morning here, 35 cm of new snow, and pre-coffee for me still. :)
Now that I have read what you're saying, I'm sure that bit of information I passed on doesn't take everything into account, such as the levels of profinciency, to which you're referring.
What you said about the language give and take that you feel sometimes: Wow. You're right to be frustrated. :(Joj Y. edytował(a) ten post dnia 07.02.08 o godzinie 15:36

I think it would be a risky move to say the least... :) We could probably add this instead:

Just to deviate from the main thread...
I've been to China some time ago, travelling with my Dutch friend. In Hong Kong and Shanghai you would more or less get decent conversations (decent = they at least have an idea what you are talking about) but then we went further into mainland. I must say a few things about that:
1) if you don't know Chinese word for something when an interlocutor does not know English, forget about getting it
2) for some reason, even sentences in Chinese characters printed in Lonely Planet guide, are completely unfamiliar for Chinese people
3) drawing pictures and gestures won't get you too far in the conversation, perhaps it's a matter of perception and cultural differences
4) even if all above happens, I was always treated with great hospitality and respect by Chinese, which is quite considerable, taking into account that they did not understand a thing I was saying or asking :)
5) Chinglish is an invention that should be saved for later generations, otherwise they won't believe its absurd humour and unintended comical structure

Ireland is included in the Union Jack.
The Union Jack is a combination of the cross of St George (England), the cross of St Andrew (Scotland), and the cross of St Patrick (Ireland).

You know that Irishmem would have been quite "displeased" in including Ireland in the United Kingdom?Being a foreigner, I don't care too much, but can understand their attitude...

I think that they are right.
The fact that the Irish element is included in the Union flag is probably not a problem. However, for someone to say to an Irish person, "Don't worry we've included Eire by putting the British Union flag in, is probably an insult.
However, since they are such proud people and have their own indigenous language, I think it is OK to have omitted their green/white/orange from this forum logo.

I couldn't agree less.
The problem with the Irish tricolour is that it is seen as a sectarian and divisive symbol by Unionists.
The tricolour therefore cannot represent the whole island of Ireland.

So you're saying the Irish (i.e. from Eire) chose the tricolour flag as they were too proud to choose something which they actually found more representative of their nation (the cross), but which was already in the Union Flag?

I'm saying, (as in the previous post) that the tricolour is an anathema to Unionists, and as it is not accepted by both traditions on the island of Ireland, cannot represent Ireland as a whole.
St Patrick's flag is common to both traditions, and is used by a few organisations that exist on an all-Ireland basis.
Of course the Union Jack, known by some in Ireland as 'the Butcher's Apron', is not acceptable to both traditions, but it does include the flag of the patron saint of Ireland.
