Temat: New Zealand votes against child smacking ban:

90% of New Zealanders voted to allow parents the risht to smack their children.

Is this a victory for common sense?

I'm reading here that the impetus for the ban in the first place was NZ's high incidence of injuries sustained by abuse - 3rd in the countries that participate in keeping track. That's what jumped out at me from the article. New Zealand? I wonder what are the co-morbidities. It doesn't seem like they have a great prevalence of alcoholism, for example, but I could be completely wrong. Just a guess. Maybe kids having kids. Who knows.

I'm not a parent. Not a big fan of corporal punishment, though, beyond an understanding of mom and dad geting scared if the kid is sitting there with a fork in an electrical outlet. "WTF! Psa Krew! Smack!!!" :)Joj Y. edytował(a) ten post dnia 21.08.09 o godzinie 19:05

I'd say there are three kinds of smacks:

1) The 'you-scared-the-living-hell-out-of-me-smack'. A smack given in the heat of the moment. Unintended.

2) The punishment smack, which is more a slap, doesn't leave stains, surprises, hurts a bit, but nothing more. Like a slap on the bottom.

3) The punishment smack, which is hard, hitting, fit for an adult.

Although I'm of the conviction that anything not as strong or big as you shouldn't be hit or smacked by you under any circumstances, taking into consideration that the first one is unavoidable (for some people), the second one might be arguable to some extent, alas the third one is absolutely unacceptable.
Or?

I've never hit my kids. Ever.

They're pretty well-behaved. I've also noticed that punishments (along the lines of "no TV today") never really work.

About banning smacking... It's hard to define... What you might think is a friendly slap might be interpreted by someone else as a smack.

I'd say the laws concerning violence in general should (and often do) apply to parents as well: you're not allowed to cause someone physical harm unless it's in self-defence.

HAHAHA
There's a list `WHERE SMACKING IS BANNED`...
Some countries look hilarious in the list. Somehow I can't imagine the Greek police arresting a Greek dad just because he smacked his son/daughter.

In the light of the article, no. If This happens in the country with almost the highest child abuse rate, then this law should stay, and cannot be banned.
I am not really against smacking, but I am not a fan of violence. Especially child abuse. Kids are weaker and smaller than adults, so we should not take advantage of that. Punishment? OK, but within a reason.
I was smacked in my poor bottom by my parents few times when I was little, but it did my no harm. I know that I deserved it for disobeying them or doing things that scared them.

Little bit of a sweet smacking is good.
I might claim it is a must.

Agreed. Sometimes it's just neccessary.
