Temat: Mechanic dies sucked into jet engine

A young jet engine mechanic died after being sucked into the engine of Airbus320 during pre-take off routine tests at Tenerife airport.

A slightly OT comment: contrary to what the article says he was sucked into the compressor and not turbine (where the combustion fumes/gases leave the engine). That's the engineer in me talking. End OT.

Apparently similar accidents have happened before:

There is a video circling around of a man who gets sucked into a jet engine and survives.

A technician being sucked into a compressor doesn't always end-up...
ok... I need to rephrase it to not irk people.

An adult size human can be saved easily from the power of an idle jet fighter engine/compressor. Also everyone wears helmets for simple reasons - to protect the head, while your hands are busy keeping yourself away from compressor.

Real disaster can happen when a fighter plane is hooked to a carrier and waiting the "go-no-go" call. Because they even start after-burners on that stage. Anything goes wrong, everything blows up.

I've heard some cases of death while the plane is on the ground, but it happens when the person doesn't wear a helmet.

This one is an old footage of an accident.

The guy is sucked into one of the intakes of A-6. As you can see, the engine poofs just because of the helmet pieces. Technician is injured.
Just, don't mess with a Boeing while it is flying...ilter K. edytował(a) ten post dnia 17.06.08 o godzinie 18:47

The compressor must be idle, though, as you correctly said. In case of the guy in Tenerife it must've been already spinning (that's a wild guess, I haven't read it anywhere).

Again, engines spin even when the plane is on the ground. GE-90 engines's blades are something like 1m long. Imagine that spinning at some thousands rpm's... or better yet: picture a meat shredder and you should get a pretty good idea of what damage it can do to anything that gets sucked inside.Jarek A. edytował(a) ten post dnia 17.06.08 o godzinie 18:53

I lived at least 10 years of my life at the air bases Jarek, my father was in Air Forces, and I've heard many real stories.
And I was about to be a pilot in Turkish AF myself.ilter K. edytował(a) ten post dnia 17.06.08 o godzinie 19:08

Yep, THAT happens in full throttle. During hook-up, but I don't know why the pilot didn't wait the confirmation.
Ah, that's a check... just heard the full story. Pilot didn't expect anyone around.ilter K. edytował(a) ten post dnia 17.06.08 o godzinie 19:11

Recently a dog being walked by its owner was sucked up into a street cleaning machine. It died in the blades.

Aircraft engine, OK. Vacuum cleaner, NO!
