Shopping:

Not the most obvious place in the world to go shopping (the largest town has a population of 20,000).

Food

A few good Indian and Italian restaurants, some good pub food and one good fish 'n' chip shop.

Other must do things:

Cowes week in August is very famous, (the yachting regatta), but the locals don't like it so much.

I could go on and on about 'the island' .....

If you're ever in Poznan ...
a) sights

The thing about Poznan is that it's actually not sight-ridden so after checking out the Old Market Square with the Town Hall and the Cathedral you'll be pretty much done ;)
There are though many places of interest around Poznan like for example the archeological site on the island in Lednica or the Wielkopolski Landscape Park. The latter is a fantastic place for cycling trips.
b) culture
Tens of people flock to Poznan for Malta Theatre Festival (June-July) and Dance Workshops (Biennale Tanca) in August. There's also a good off-theatre, Teatr Dnia Osmego.
c) shopping
For that there's no place like Stary Browar. An architectural jewel IMHO. It's brick and iron construction is one of a kind blending perfectly the ultra-modern with designs reminiscent of the 19th century.

Obrazek

d) food

My faves are -
Le Bistrot - for Danesi coffee and Italian antipasti
Fidelio - original Italian cuisine
Sakana Sushi Bar - for those who don't mind sharing the table with all the other diners. sushi served in the form of little boats floating around the bar
Zielona Weranda - a botanical heaven and a cult place for delicious salads
Czekolada - best ice-coffee in town IMO
e) other 'must do' things (if any).

Malta Lake (in my neighbourhood) is a great place for all sorts of leisure activities from cycling and rollerskating to skiing all year around.

What else can I say? Welcome to Poznan! (And be sure to let me know if you're around)Rafał Janta edytował(a) ten post dnia 14.07.08 o godzinie 23:19

I was too lazy to contribute, but now feel guilty. It's Gdańsk and the whole of 3city after all. So.
Sylwia Łubkowska:
Imagine someone from Anglosphere would like to go and visit your place (for a weekend). What would you recommend in terms of:

a) sights

- When showing people around, I always encourage them to climb (not too much climbing really) the Archeological Museum tower in St. Mary's Street (instead of St. Mary Church cruelly high tower packed with tourists - it's worth doing and can be impressive, though). The view is beautiful and it feels as if you could just stretch your hand and touch a roof nearby (not possible at St. Mary's).

- All landmarks from guidebooks. Absolutely. Just to whet your appetite:

b) culture

Ladies' Jazz Festival in Gdynia is just over and so is Open'er.
Shakespeare Festival is coming, and so is Jarmark Dominikański.

I don't recommend Sopot Festival though it's all a matter of taste.

Apart from that - theatres, concerts, etc. all year round.
c) shopping

Galeria Bałtycka in Gdańsk, obviously, big enough to suck life out of you.
Sopot, Al. Niepodległości is a place where a bunch of my favourite secondhands is located.
d) food
Sopot is packed with less and more expensive places to eat as well as cafes to drink. 'Sanatorium' and 'Zielony Dwór' are nice places to dine and 'Józef K.' and 'Błękitny Pudel' to chat over a coffee. Practically no chance to get a seat summer evening. I don't really eat out in Gdańsk or Gdynia, but my favourite cafe in Gdańsk is 'PiKawa' in Piwna Street. I recommend those cafes only if you like 'a grandma attic' interiors and dusty armchairs. Apart from these more decent places, it's Greenway, also available in some other Polish cities, which keeps me alive.
e) other 'must do' things (if any).

It depends on who you are.
For many, a must is a visit to Westerplatte, of course.
But you may choose to take a boat trip to Hel to see the seals instead.
You may feel it's a must to visit the Oliwa Cathedral to listen to the organ concert and to take a walk in the old Oliwa Park.
Or Gdańsk National Museum for a famous and impressive 'The Last Jugement' by Memling.
In Sopot, I drag my guests to streets a bit off crowded Monciak promenade to imagine what a spa town during belle epoque and the twenties looked like.

Only it's rainy now and when it's rainy in a seaside city, it's really sad. If you don't show up early, and I mean early, enough, all the lovely cafes are packed with people pissed off that they cannot fry themselves brown in the beach. Galeria Bałtycka must do and that's even sadder.Kamila G. edytował(a) ten post dnia 17.07.08 o godzinie 18:39

Steve Jones:
Come on .... Can no one beat Manchester???? ;)

I challenge you!

I went to check out 'Munchester' yesterday - it was superb! ;)
And Steve, you should seriously consider an alternative job as a tour guide!
Shame I couldn't make it to the Museum of Science and Industry, as my coach was running late, but I loved that tiny pub we went to. And I did the wheel ride too, everything was great, even the weather (the famous Manchester Drizzle).

Pictures to follow over the weekend, when I'm back home.

Thanks Steve, I owe you! ;)

A new spot on the map of Poznan!

And I mean it. Spot is a concept store combining a resto, boutique, home design store, SPA and even a kindergaten all set in a converted industrial building on the outskirts of a park.
The loft-like architecture is great and the whole concept very coherent. The place is still evolving so I'm gonna give myself time to form my final opinion. But the lunch I had there today was very tasty, especially the sweet pepper cream with grissini.
Ah, and there's a wine counter, too. It's only Spanish wines from all regions of the country. And it's run by a Spaniard, my ex-colleague ;)
