Anyone out there living in Lodz?

Is it a cool city?

Does it have a lot to offer a young Englishman?

Rate the city on a scale from 1-10. 1=you'd have to be mad to go there. 10=the pearl of Europe

I have my aunt there.

Is it a cool city?
As cool as Radom.

Does it have a lot to offer a young Englishman?
Yes, sir. Unemployment, dirty streets, in some districts (Bałuty) people drinking in the streets, etc. Oh, there is this modern shopping centre Manufaktura, I think.

I've only been there once. I wasn't disappointed with what I saw, because I knew more or less what to expect, but I definitely didn't like what I saw, if you know what I mean.

Lodz is a post-industrial city, and from a hit-and-run tourist's perspective doesn't seem to have too much to offer (forget about Piotrkowska street for a while).

I've heard people compare Lodz to other famous european industrial cities, like Manchester or Turin. Dunno about Manchester (Steve may give us some insight), but I do see some resemblance to Turin. Well, Turin DOES have a nice, old, big, city center, plenty of museums, monuments and general tourist attractions, while Lodz seems to lack all those things. But in both cities if you move 100meters away from the main street/square/plaza you will find yourself in gloomy and dirty neighbourhoods.

On a scale of 1-10, I give it 2,5.

EDIT: -10 ! I see V is a lot less PC than I am :)

OK, so how many points would you give to Wroclaw (and Warsaw, just to have a full picture)? ;>

I was in Lodz to see one of my best friends many years ago, and we did the Piotrkowska thing, plus an obscure cool cinema called Cytryna. Places without the Rynek make me feel like there's no proper city centre.

The mentality of the Baluty people and the like is a different story.

I`ve been to Wraclaw once. Can`t tell you much. I liked the Old City.

Coming back to the original question about a young Englishman.

I don't think they have any particular interest in old historical buildings, especially that they're more or less the same everywhere.

Young Englishmen perhaps may need the Baluty taste to enjoy Poland as something unique.

Anyway you always get this 'grey buildings' feedback from a foreigner.
Or a surprise that it isn't so grey as they imagined or remember from the previous visits.

There are exceptions though.

I'm never tired of the Old Town here.

All my life (and I used to live a bigger part of it only 60km from Lodz) I had exactly same opinion as Violetta. If not worse.

But just recently I spent a week in Lodz, where my mum lives and I was very positively surprised. It is getting better. Really.

Who knows, one day it may even be a beautiful and prosperous city - watch this space.

It improved a lot over the past few years - it is not that ugly and scruffy as it used to be.

I was shocked but I quite liked it - and I would never suspect I will ever say anything nice about this city.

But, mind you, I spent most of my time in the very central part of it and Gorna borough, so maybe that's why. On the other hand - Lodz as I remember it from let's say, 8 years ago was ugly even in the very centre of it. Loads of scruffy buildings next to and in Piotrkowska street. It is so much better now.

I think it deserves 4 or maybe even 5. In plus!

edit: or maybe 3.5 if you compare it to New York, London and others like that.

4-5 in comparison with Polish cities like Wroclaw (10), Poznan (10), Krakow (10), Warsaw (mind you - Warsaw is only 2 for me).Malgorzata F. edytował(a) ten post dnia 05.09.08 o godzinie 10:33

It's not the coolest place to go to, but you will find nice pubs there (Piotrkowska street), nice shopping centre - one that looks really nice Manufaktura, see Ksiezy Mlyn - old factories and houses of the factory workers (it is even mentioned in my English book on 1000 interesting things to see in the world's cities or something, can't remember actual title).

It is also quite interesting in it's scruffiness outside the central area.

Nice museums and buildings there too. Like Palac Poznanskich and some huge chapel on one of the old cemeteries, really spectacular but unfortunatelly I can't remember name of this one.

I've been there once or twice and that's true - it is dirty and ugly. I love old cities with their architecture and there are some very nice things worth to see but comparing for instance with Lublin where I live, it is mostly an unpleasant place. I wouldn't like to live there.

Been there plenty and love it. There's something special about it. It isn't just that it's the westernmost big city in the Russian Empire (which it was), and it isn't the various attractions (Piotrkowska is fun and there are some 'special interest' fleshpots which are worth going to), it isn't just that it has Poland's only
Michelin starred restaurant (Le Vanille) or (possibly Europe's only) Uighur restaurant. (Like a Wietnamski but different food.

It's something about the atmosphere. These cities that were built as new towns in the 19th century are usually fairly grim, but central Lodz is an architectural gem with its own climate. Resoring it will spoil it a bit.

Maybe it's the long urban history (in Warsaw a heck of a lot of people are a generation or two from growing potatoes and making bigos - Lodz people tend not to be so rurally-minded, even though Lodz is still very Polish, in a different sense of Polishness), or maybe it's the fact that the only places people need to go are within walking distance.

I can just wander round soaking in the atmosphere. It's no coincidence that filmmakers like Lodz.

There's certainly something a bit special there.

I was born in Lodz and I love it!!! Maybe it's not the most beautiful city in Poland but it has a great atmosphere. But to dicover it one has to spent more then just a few days. Thus it's a good idea to have some kind of guide who can tell u more about the culture and history. And don't forget to visit Manufaktura!!!
