Temat: Learning from Mistakes

Three schools of thought:

The first one is that mistakes are a terrible thing and we should avoid making them.

The second is that we should not be afraid of mistakes because we can always learn something from them. In fact, if you don't make a mistake you miss a learning opportunity.

The third says that people do NOT in fact learn from mistakes, but will tend to endlessly repeat patterns of behaviour, even if such patterns are ultimately useless or even destructive for them.

Where do you stand?

I’m with the second notion, however the third seems to be the winning team.

Logics say that the second should be the winning one. Self preservation instincts vote for the first one. And experience chooses the last one so it's really hard to decide

Temat: Learning from Mistakes

we should not be afraid of mistakes but also we should not be afraid to correct others while they are making mistakes

If I'm not aware of my mistakes I'll be making them all the time. So please let me know about my mistakes.

There's a fourth school: avoid making mistakes but when you do (and you eventually will) learn from them to help you avoid making them again.

I used to think I was smart and able to learn from my mistakes. Every time something went wrong, I would dissect the whole experience, ponder over it, and then make little mental notes to self, saying, "Do not repeat!" Strangely enough, this worked until I was 22, and then the whole thing collapsed as if my life had been turned upside down. I keep making the same "mistakes" all over again - even though I keep thinking about them a lot - the mental notes no longer seem to work. I know it won't be good for me, I know I'll end up bruised and battered, and somehow I go for the impossible. I think I began to trust "coincidence" and "fate" more, and have managed to find something good in every single bad situation.

Ideally, we should always learn from our mistakes, and never repeat them, but I believe the third option is true for most of us.

Steve Jones:
Three schools of thought:

The first one is that mistakes are a terrible thing and we should avoid making them.
That's correct. If it is possible, we shouldn't make any mistakes.
No one likes to suffer just because of a stupid mind.
Don't make a mistake!
(if it is possible)
But we're human, and sometimes absent-minded human(s). And sometimes, we can't know that the thing we're going to do in a minute will be considered as a mistake -mistakes can not be avoided always.
They don't give you the manual of life.
The second is that we should not be afraid of mistakes because we can always learn something from them. In fact, if you don't make a mistake you miss a learning opportunity.
We should be afraid of mistakes, because some mistakes causes death.
Some of them are not so severe, but WE pay for them at the end.
We should be afraid, but there's no point on feeling like dying because we've done many of mistakes.
The third says that people do NOT in fact learn from mistakes, but will tend to endlessly repeat patterns of behaviour, even if such patterns are ultimately useless or even destructive for them.
People DO learn from mistakes. Touch the boiling water, you learn your lesson.
But there are different priorities, weaknesses and moments in our lives.
What type of mistakes we're going to keep on repeating (hehe) depends on our personalities.
I've always been weak for the love of women, for example. If a woman causes me to stay in a hospital for 2 years, I'm sure I will be reluctant to do the same type of mistake. :)
But some mistakes are so sweet to repeat. It can give you pleasures which can not be substituted by anyfing. They can last short, but hey, the life is short anyway.
Where do you stand?
Right here. My coffee got cold though. Boo.

Somehow I thought you're referring to language learning, Steve.

I believe I do learn from mistakes, but do not apply my learnt knowledge in analogical situations later on. So I know more about myself (what I'm prone to) but do not necessarily know what to do with the knowledge.
