Story Here

A jilted Japanese woman has been arrested for "murdering" an avatar in an online role-playing game - after it divorced her character.

Are we close to crossing the border between IRL and virtual worlds? Has anyone here entered Second Life yet?

It sounds weird to me ...
I cannot understand why some people focus on a silly and artificial virtual life instead of having interesting valuable real life. Maybe they want to forget about their everyday problems ....
I've never entered Second Life - for me it's a waste of my precious time.

Someone must be watching over me, because some time ago I actually wanted to give Second Life a shot. I tried to sign in, create a character but for some reason I simply couldn't do it. For about a week I kept getting an error message.

I do think we're pretty close to crossing the line. Kids that spend too much time playing video games, tend to lose the sense of reality. When you're 6 y.o. (8... 10... whatever) you see nothing out of ordinary in watching your video game character getting killed to then respawn, stronger than ever. They (the kids)) then go out to and act the same in the real world.

There was a case recently where a bunch of kids killed their colleague because "they were trying to re-enact a kill scene from a video game".

Fortunately, she only "killed" his avatar, but the jail sentence was real!

Jarek I agree with you,

I would say that we are doomed by this, I am sure that you remember that massacre below:

When I was at the age of 14 till 18 I was an fpp-tactics-games addict.
At the present I am still a video games player but I try to do it more reasonable, as sometimes I truly haven't got time for playing.

a bit off topic,

Yes there is violence in games,
Yes you can always ‘respawn’ when you die and there are no real life consequences
Yes, you can crash a car at 300 mph and just restart the race
But, you can also learn some compelling things – problems solving/ eye to hand coordination/ leadership skills/ management skills/ even responsibility! Ha, can you believe that?

I know, I’m bias cause I’m a bit of a gamer, but it doesn’t change these facts. Games these days are so compelling in their form. I can honestly say that some of the games out there are truly marvelous, I consider them forms of art.

Sure there is a lot of that senseless bullshit out there these days, that don’t ask anything from you other then to switch of your mind – run n’ gun, but every other genre has the same issues.

But it’s a GAME. If you blame violent child behavior on video games, then lets got out and blame gangsta commercial rap, movies and let’s not forget about books (even our cute Frodo gets to slice some Goblins). But in the end who should be to blame for acts of child violence? Game devs.? Psuedo Gangster Rappers? Governor of California? Or maybe we should take a step back and look at the kids’ parents/guardians?

There is a certain truth to the blurring of reality and virtual reality. I don’t know anything about second life, cause I’ve never played it, but some individuals do run off in to the virtual world from real life problems. These people have the same weaknesses that drug abusers have (note: weaknesses i.e. addictive personality/escapism/low self-esteem).

I read it yesterday. Yes, the sentence was real, but she was found guilty not for the murder - she has stolen electronic data and abused it.

Tatiana, there are people - and I know them - who have crossed that border already long time ago. I used to play a lot in RPG (Roleplaying Games) online a few years ago, actually, that's where my English knowledge comes from. I was in a very toxic relationship and couldn't find myself in the real life. I felt unattractive, unsuccessful, fat, ugly, stupid and helpless. My "alter ego" - cute redhead green-eyed lithe elven magician - was a Guildmistress of the one of the biggest guilds in that realms, she had a fiance (IRL great guy from Denmark, we are friends till now), huge summer residence, Emerald Eden castle, wardrobe full of awesome dresses, she was a Senior Mage of the High Mage Council and in principle she was able to destroy 1/5th of the land with her empowered greater fireball. I was really close to give up my real life for that... I was lucky enough to meet a man, who helped me a lot and I came back to the "real life". End of the story.

Probably the story sounds pretty sad, but in fact I never regretted that period of my life. I learned a lot about myself, my inclination toward addictions, the power of my brain, which is able to create a totally new life for me. I can do as I please and... it's DANGEROUS.Aleksandra Dziemaszkiewicz edytował(a) ten post dnia 24.10.08 o godzinie 11:06

Oh, something very much fitting the topic:

Some hermetic RPG words, but still understandable. Pay attention, how they put an emphasis pronouncing World of Warcraft ;)
