I'm no expert, as usual, it's a real life situation that puzzles me and I'm asking myself questions.

In general your gut feeling is usually right? So why not stick to it?

I think it's got more to do with successfully weighing all the pros and cons of whatever decision we are making. You can have a "gut feeling" but it's just a matter of 50/50 it will either come true or not. This is why "intuition" is so popular, your instincts will either server you right or fail you.

Hmm, that's a good question.

I actually follow my instincts a lot. They sometimes prevail over rational thinking, some sort of pros/cons list (Ross & Rachel hehe).

While trusting your intuition in every day life can be understandable, using the same approach at work (I mean industry, where everything is standardized, regulated, controlled.. or should be) may seem risky.

People sometimes ask me: how'd you know it would work? I didn't. I felt it would, strongly, but I didn't.

I'd say that intuition is only applicable to the "first time events". Once you start evaluating, assessing, observing, using the lessons learned and whatnot, the decision making process starts shifting ever so slowly towards analysis and using previous experience.

I don't think one can develop intuition.

I'd like to direct you to a book called "Blink".

The cut and thrust of the book is the premise that over-pondered decisions are often shite whereas quick ones (intuition, if you like) are often better.

Various examples are given and, bugger me, the premise indeed turns out to be true WITH ONE MAJOR CAVEAT: to be accurate with intuition, you need to have had previous experience. For example, to weight up if a date is going to turn into a long-lasting relationship, you need to have had experience of meeting people and having relationships.

Makes sense, doesn't it? The more experience, the more you are able to tell within 5 seconds: not my type.

How do you develop intuition?

Develop experiences! And also switch off your conscious self and stretch out with your feelings!

If I were to base my intuitive dating decisions on previous experience with relationships, I'd never get past the first date.

I've met a lot of women telling the same. Women suck sometimes when it comes to their choices, or they give the impression that they suck.
