Temat: Icons - a portrait of England

Apart from browsing hundreds of icons of England - from Monty Python to mashed potatoes and gravy, you can also vote for some nominated or nominate completely new ones!

Any favourites? I've just voted for brown sauce and "Mind The Gap" :)

English icons?
I remember a conversation with drunken Scotsman (when I used to work behind the bar) about English icons.
he claimed that there was nothing internationally recognised from England, unlike Scottish things :)
What do you think, is it worth comparing at all?

I'm not sure whether it makes any sense to compare it. Yet, I'm deeply convinced if we counted the icons of Scotland we could have a lot of work, as well, from Aye to Z :) Well, shall we? How about starting a thread with Scotland-related icons and associations? :)

I'm not sure whether they should be called icons of England or icons for the English (or British).
I doubt whether many would be recognisable to foreigners.

Interesting to see 'The bobby' in the list. I wonder though what is more familiar, the bobby or the bobby's helmut?

P.S. My favourite is Blackpool Tower since it is in my home town, i.e. BlackpoolSteven H. edytował(a) ten post dnia 13.03.08 o godzinie 20:41

Just for fun I wanted to see what jumoped out at me as being iconic at first glance, and it was...the Lake District.

Don't ask me why 'cause I don't know. Why do I do even HALF of the things I do? :)

Winnie-the-Pooh, my son's all-time favorite.

So many of them:
Shakespeare, tea, a joint of lamb, orange marmalade, roast potatoes, Churchill, the Queen, sage and onion stuffing, Turner and so on and so forth.
When I think of England, I see beautiful valleys, meadows and hills all around.Wendy Tweed edytował(a) ten post dnia 13.03.08 o godzinie 22:03

For me personally, it's scones as part of cream tea I used to enjoy in the West Country. Yuuummy...
And definitely heather moorlands...

Not necessarily. As far as I know here in Poland, under communism, it was made of apples (probably still is, but I have no bloody idea about that). I'm not the best cook ever so you may as well be right...

I wasn't :)
Marmalade can only be made from oranges, if it is made from anything else it can not be called marmalade, but jam or something.

This words is very often misused these days.

You're right. I know that Polish 'marmalade' is one thing and English marmalade is another. To let you get a clearer picture I am really 'food illiterate'. I eat what I like and I like what I eat, and only try to remember the names of dishes and food I enjoy eating.
But you sound as if you are an expert. Are you?Wendy Tweed edytował(a) ten post dnia 13.03.08 o godzinie 22:40

Maybe not an expert but a food lover I would name myself...
I used to work in Loch Fyne which is seafood restaurant chain in the UK. Then I used to work for Antony Worrall Thopmson in his little Restaurant near my place "The Greyhound, Free House and Grill".
I enjoy food very much, as well as good wine. I would never had thought that I would drink dry wine, and here I am :)

Under these circumstances I promise to keep my mouth sealed whenever a food subject is raised in our group.Wendy Tweed edytował(a) ten post dnia 13.03.08 o godzinie 22:41

I will be a good boy :)
It is always good to learn even through our own mistakes :)
I have learnt my lesson not to give my personal opinion at all ;)

How about if it is made with limes? Maybe it should only be associated with citrus fruit?

Another icon - how about the door of No. 10 Downing Street?
