A good book on the topic is Stephen Heller's "Monsters and magic sticks: there's no such thing as hypnosis", mainly about different cases where hypnotherapy was used on people who did not believe in the existence of hypnosis or that they themselves could be hypnotised.The fact is that there are two broad categories of people:
1. Those who have gone into a hypnotic state

That sounds interesting. I was reading some Milton Erickson who believed that were always in one degree of trance or another.
Milton Erickson was the father of hypnotherapy. I like this idea of always being in some sort of trance.
We're often in one without realising it. Like when we're driving along and an hour later we get somewhere and can't really remember the route.
Or when we're looking around the flat for the car keys and can't find them at all. Then 10 minutes later we look again and there they are on the table which we'd looked at several times before...
