Nah, I'm not really interested in hip-hop. What got me enchanted is the language, the battle is translated to. :)

It takes a very special person to be able to convey the message contained within hip hop battles. It's more than just poetry because it draws directly from culture and culture that is not really available through the mainstream, books or anything of sort. Someone can say - "I've studied the hip hop culture or I've read a lot of books on the subject", but when it comes to this sort of thing.. I mean it happens on the fly and a lot of it is very regional based type humor where if you don't know, then you just won't get it. A lot of artists draw parallels to things from pop culture and media such as cartoons that they've seen in their childhood or games, comics etc etc...
I could for example say something to the effect:
"...I spit new styles like exploding power of a star / Nova heralds news of impending doom traveling through galaxies from afar..." (just an example)
Now... the logic would say that the parallel lays in something like space exploration or exploding supernovae etc.... but in reality what I mean is Nova - a comic book character from the Marvel Universe who was also a herald for Galactus - the planet devourer... so the meaning holds a lot more emotional weight and it also could steer the battle to a different realm… if both artists are familiar with comics (and they usually are) they could take it there and reply with something that could contradict the power of Nova or Galactus himself now and pretty much pull out another character to wipe this one out.. it’s a game of poker, lots of bluff and shit load of shit talking ;) but it does make for a hell of a show.
