A police raid in Cologne today found workers working in hair-salons for 1,50Euro per hour.

If your unemployment runs out and you slip into social welfare, the German state can force you to do labor for 1Euro per hour.

There is no general minimum wage in Germany and with the FDP (the liberal party) now in the government, there certainly will none be introduced. Only jobs which are regulated through workers unions have a minimum wage (with loopholes).

A more personal note: My father has a constant trouble with competitors from Eastern Germany. While my father can't offer an hourly wage below 7,50Euro, his Eastern German competitors offer prices around 2,50Euro. Please bear in mind, that these people have to drive a couple of hundred kilometers to and fro!

A German woman who worked at the same company for more than three decades recently got fired for pilfering a small burger from her boss' buffet. Her supervisors say she abused the trust they had in her. The case will soon be heard by a labor court.

I can say something what goes on around it in Poland. There is in Poland something like the minimum wage but in most cases it is just an illusion, especially in private sector. People must work for low salaries if they don t want to get fired. But I thought that in Germany there is well-shaped system of social assistance ?

What do you mean? Self-employers and people not being employed in big companies do not benefit.

There is some minimal wage in the UK and it depends on your age but tbh I have never looked up how much it was ~£5.5 or thereabouts.

I think the minimum wage in the USA is 7 dollars and 25 cents per hour.

Raising the minimum wage is a tricky thing to balance here. Some people claim that the extra money in your pocket increases consumer confidence and retail spending. Opponents of that say it makes it harder for small business owners to manage, puts more people working for pay "under the table," or black market, thereby depleting the tax base, and is ineffective for helping to ease poverty because the cost of a Big Mac simply rises along with the wage.

So anyways, 7.25 USD.

Unemployment benefits are paid for six month. After that you slide into Umeployment benefits II/Social welfare, which is called Hartz IV (due to it's founding father Peter Hartz, who recently came out of prison, since he was tied in a corruption scandal at VW).

Hartz IV gives you about 350Euro per month, extra benefits for kids and rent. But on the other side forces you to work for 1Euro per hour and other activities, amongst unannounced visits by your controller, having to open all your books and drawers of income and wealth to the state, having to spend all your savings which are over 10'000 Euros before the state grants you any benefit, and many more rules...

The minimum wage in Poland amounts 1276 zł what means about 300 euro, but you have to remember about deducting the wage of taxes.
