Somewhere deep inside you there's a little perfectionist censor, Lidia. Admit it. Embrace it. Have a good day ;)
Is this why we get on so well?

The censor in me says: possibly

Have to run to the market to buy chantarelles before they're gone.
Now, that's a perfect post to be deleted ;)

Luckily, I do not have to practice my English, as I live in England.
On the other hand, it turns out to be worse than living in Poland and studying, as my vocabulary does not expand that fast now, and I think that my accent even deteriorated.

Your English always reflects people you hang out with, right?

Łukasz, I don't know for how long have you been living there, but I'm sure your accent will get much better if you stay there longer. I mean, if you don't mind British accent, that is.

Ilter, I have been here for over 3 years now, and I think that accent rather does not improve (maybe my phonetics teacher was so good? ;))
I must admit that I am very lucky that I live in Henley-on-Thames, which is very beautiful place and very posh, with proper RP.
The thing is, that not everyone uses such pronunciation, and majority of younger people use different accents, hence my deteriorates :)

BTW, I love British Accent!

Not always, but it does help if you surround yourself with native speakers and try to interact as much as you can. I find it hard to believe that you are not gaining vocabulary while studying. Why is that?

Isn't it the case that most Poles hang out with other Poles while abroad?
I'm not so sure about it but who do you spend your free time with?
Poles or non-Poles?

I detest the RP accent ;)

I find this to be the case when it comes to pretty much any minority. I was "lucky" enough to live in a place where there were only 3 Polish families, so I had to pick up quick.

I do have a small group of Polish friends here, but you can definitely count them on one hand.

I detest the RP accent ;)

Why? I've heard much, much worst.

I could never be a teacher.
I get too angry whenever I hear/read someone making mistakes.
It makes me even more angry when someone who considers himself/herself a teacher or a translator of English is making silly mistakes even I would never do.

I know, no one's perfect, BLAH BLAH BLAH.

But why teaching something you are not perfect in?

Same goes with Poles who teach Polish (and worse, have a degree in Polish philology!) ans at the same time say "wziąść, chłopacy, tu pisze, etc." - WTF!?

(uhm, no idea whether this should go to this thread, just had to speak up..)Magdalena Natalia Wiśniowska edytował(a) ten post dnia 20.09.08 o godzinie 21:04

Because there is no-one 'perfect' available.

Hardly anyone completely masters a second language, although there are a small number of notable exceptions.

You are a manager of an English school. Do all the teachers you have employed speak English perfectly?warren whitmore edytował(a) ten post dnia 20.09.08 o godzinie 21:35

Yes, I WAS a manager and yes I did employ people whose knowledge of English was worse than mine but they suited elementary levels up to pre-advanced, etc.
You obviously do not need to be excellent in a specific field, its just the working knowledge of the language necessary at that point and it was the centre's role to direct the trainer to conduct trainings properly (active methods of teaching, etc.)

I get your point.
You can always teach to a certain point but the problem is when those who know their English is on the same level as their students still consider themselves better and do teach the wrong vocab/wrong Grammar or simply cannot teach anything new - no, we did not practice that where I've worked but yes, I know some schools do, some very well known schools, WHICH IS PATHETIC.Magdalena Natalia Wiśniowska edytował(a) ten post dnia 20.09.08 o godzinie 21:57

I would agree that is PATHETIC.

But very often the situation cannot really be helped.

Especially in state schools.

However, language schools should never 'teach' students if the 'teacher' is not significantly better than those being 'taught'.
Personally, I'd rather refund the money than organise such farcical lessons.

Magdalena Natalia Wiśniowska:
But why teaching something you are not perfect in?
Because this is not a rocket science.
I've studied Biology and first thing you could do when you're "out" was (and is) teaching.
Rocket science part comes later, if you take it to the next level: MA, PhD, etc. If you're working in the top labs and you become a Genetics Engineer, you usually don't go "Oh, I should teach this to teenagers at high school".
Teaching is the most basic way of "transferring the knowledge".

I also taught Biology at schools, and I was never perfect. All you need to do is to be ready and willing to teach.

Oh, forgot to add...
The "formation" is for sure important. Educational sciences are there for a reason. Educational Psychology and Sociology helps to deal with a class full of youngsters.

I do not study English anymore, just live in a country where English is a native language and I love it (I guess? ;))
I use English at work,, sometimes at home, watch English TV, read English web sites etc. I reckon I might actually qualify that for "studying", and I think I gain vocab as well, but not as much as when I was young and properly studied.

@Lidia - I do actually live with Poles, and it does make a difference.
