Temat: How different are people online and in real life:
O.k.
This is a story of my life.
I met A LOT of people whom I talked to online. None of them lied about their employment, age or marital status. They have mostly lied (if ever) about their appearance and general characteristics including personality.
I never met a junky, an alcoholic or a psycho. These were mostly just some minor personality issues like trying to be too funny/talkative/interesting, which is a sign of low self-confidence. I guess I am extremely cautious when "choosing" whether or not to meet up for a coffee, if something is "not right" in their online appearance I can predict the meeting will be a disaster or that I will meet a totally different personality.
But this is a story of people who are absolutely anonymous. These are just discussion boards, ICQ, GG talks.
Goldenline is way different. First of all, you can't be anonymous due to the requirement of giving name so there is always a chance someone knows you here and can tell when you lie. Second of all, you show a picture of yourself, which is another thing that is pro "not so different" in IRL - of course, there are those fakers, those Photoshop upgraded images but that's just a small percentage.
+ there is also a small percentage of those who do not wish to be recognized at all (no picture, just the first name) so these definitely are less likely to be considered "true".
I cannot remember the study but I have read that people stopped to lie about themselves online comparing to what they did in the beginning of the Internet because people become less and less unreal while the internet progresses (remember about skype, etc. - how can you be different there?). Look how many people couple over the Internet. I know so many marriages who started up by talking online.. I think Internet seves so many different roles now that people do trust what they see here.
And GL is a good example.
