I've just booked a holiday in Ramsgate, Kent. What do you say I might expect there? Polluted sea, stormy weather or...?

If you'd asked me about 25 years ago I could have told you. My grandma went to live there for a few years.
The south east of the UK isn't really the place that gets the worst storms, so as long as you aren't there in November you should be OK.
Sea - I think that the UK's waters are a lot less polluted than they were, though I wouldn't recommend swimming in it simply because it is freezing.

I'd expect it is a sad, partly decayed remnant of a once popular seaside town, like all the others around the English coast.

Oh, and there's probably a lot of immigrants which have just come across from nearby Dover where they landed.Steven H. edytował(a) ten post dnia 10.04.08 o godzinie 20:44

Which means it will be boring and gloomy and sad, so perhaps I should cancel? I'm going in August. :)

Oh, I forgot to say that Kent is the garden of England. Now that sounds positive, doesn't it?

Seriously though, I have no idea what it is like as I can't remember it. Seaside towns in Britain are frequently rather neglected though. I went to Cleethorpes for a day out last year. This is in the north of England. I found it rather depressing. My home town, Blackpool, is the biggest seaside resort and has a lot to do, but it is very tacky and attracts very little (and very few people) of class.
Maybe Ramsgate is different though...
Still, you will use it as a base to visit other places. You aren't going to spend a week solely within the town, surely?

Of course not,it's going to be cultural holiday in the first place, beach in the second. Something to make me read The Canterbery Tales ( I truely loved them )and D. Copperfield again. :)
The place is already fully booked - I mean Margate, Ramsgate and Broadstairs so it can't be so bad! And the hotel I booked seems to be the way I like- will be the special guest there. Besides The royal harbour and yachts are very near. Sounds ok to me but maybe I'm wrong?

Kent - that most rude sounding of all English counties!

Dunno - should be nice I reckon!

Really? Why? It doesn't sound rude to me. Is it because of the people there? The man I talked to on the phone sounded friendly.

Dependant on people pronouncing it, it could sound rather very rude :)
Kent is not so bad, all London surrounding counties (boroughs) are pretty and well maintained, I am sure you are going to love it Alicja.
The question is, why did you choose Kent from a variety of absolutely stunning places in Britain?
Why not Cornwall (Newquay, amazing!), Devon (Poole, the Riviera of England) etc.?

I know, but I just have a brochure with the hotels and descriptions of the places here so it was easier to choose something there. And less risky because all the hotels in this brochure have some awards for quality service.

As a Kentish Man (born west of the River Medway, as opposed to the far inferior Men of Kent born east of the River Medway) I can assure you that Kent is by far the nicest and most interesting place in Britain. Ramsgate is actually a pretty nice town, much nicer than nearby Margate, and the coastal cliffs are spectacular around there. Here's a useful link if you haven't see it alreay:

Alicja, to be fairly honest with you UK is not a type of country where you should be worried about quality of service or accommodation.
I bet that pretty much any B'n'B you would go to, would turned out to be a nice place :)
Anyway, I hope you are going to enjoy it and next time you can always ask us here, what is really worth seeing in the UK :)

I think how you view it will depend on why you are there. If you are on your holidays and relaxed you'll see the best side. When I'm back in the UK part of my mind is critically examining everywhere and everybody analysing whether I'd want to return to the county to live.

Maybe Ramsgate and Margate are doing well, but it can't be denied that a lot of seaside towns in England have been in decline for decades as people no longer holiday in the UK (or do so just for short stays) and no other industry has come in to replace the lost jobs. This then results in neglect of infrastructure and a downwards spiral.

I'm certain that Canterbury is worth visiting though.

I wouldn't agree with that as when I was searching for the hotel I could read some comments about dirty toilets, dusty furniture or unfriendly staff. Besides, quality also means some excellence of service, so in other words, the way the customer is served and I was also looking for that. Thanks anyway, will remember about this in future. :))
