Hehe.. no problem. One time we were hosting couple friends of a friend from France, and they really wanted a full out NY experience, (now this is only maybe 4 years ago or so, right before our first was born, with that said, NY was already over ran by these types) so we ended up running into a friend of ours Trevor who is a bouncer for a lot of clubs and bars, he was working at this hipster hang out joint and invited us. Let me just sum it up this way – I probably would have had more fun having my nuts squeezed slowly in a vice than watching these people party. It was a night of real bad 80’s music interlaced with pretty much every weird looking hipster from the site, posing, trotting like they own the place with too much make up, bad clothes and cocaine mustaches. Never again. Nightmare…
Kari and I are still used to the NYC that we’ve experienced while we were young and careless and it was a completely different city that belonged to the people who were born and raised there, real New Yorkers… lately due to some “improvements” it was turned into the rich and not so famous hang out spot for hipsters, yuppies and trust fund babies… it really has lost it’s edge and originality all together. From over 5000 bars, lounges and clubs that used to boom sound and parties till early morning hours, it now features less than 250 and most of them are hang out spots for the above mentioned. This is where the distaste comes from. I really dislike pretentiousness and this is pretty much nothing more then the pits of it. Funny thing is, as cheap, dirty and scummy as these people look, they shop at places where they would charge you over $200 for a tee shirt simply because some “known” artist ripped it up and smeared it with paint to make it look like you … well.. dunno where that style heads … but you get the point.

Rafal, you know, for me, very superficially, in a way it's such a relief to see these guys. They have hair on their head, for example!
Maybe it's not very original, and the site is fantastically ironic about it, but at least they don't look like some Nazi gym freaks. I hope you know what I mean.

OK, it seems that Lidia additionally would need to talk to them to get what is the thing about ;)

In Poland, at least in some environments, we have one word for it: "lans". And from your description Rafał it's basically the same. Maybe just the scale is bit different. However I was connecting this group rather with house music not 80's disco.

One more thing Rafał. I believe that now, most of people comming to parties simply think that it is how it's supposed to be and generally totally don't get the point because of lack of comparision. And the conclusion that comes to their minds is that they generally don't like parties because they are too... insincere (had to use a thesaurus here ;) ).

I hope that at least the jungle scene in NYC still resists ;) Does it? I have some doubts since they started to make one of the cyclic events in Avalon ;)

I know what you mean, but if that hair is dripping with oil and when they walk by you, they tend to leave a trail of "not so phreshness" that mingles with body odor, cheap cologne and hairspray... urgh...
They are faux-starving artists who’s mommy and daddy are paying for their expensive loft apartments in Manhattan and Williamsburg who complain about everything and nothing. No offense, they are just a bunch of overgrown whiny bitches with no general sense of direction and overly exaggerated purposeless lack of metro style. I know that it is somewhat of a phenomenon in all major cities world wide where people trail in for a hope of a better life or whatever… and wherever you go you will find people like myself who complain about those who complain… but god damn it, they get on my nerves hahaha… New Yorkers are people who are so easy going and so matter of fact that this new plague has changed the face of many of best NYC neighborhoods. Lower East Side, Williamsburg Brooklyn, Astoria Queens… oh well… I’ll quit my bitching now.. hehe…

See... this is the anti-lans. This is the - "look at me, I look like a total dirt bag, 'cause I dont give a fuck!" It's almost punk, but with out the hardcore life style and clothes that look like something out of the 80's romantic comedy, just filthy and worn out.

Oh, it's not disco... its worst, it's 80's hair metal and rock with disco ... it makes it that much worst. It's John Cougar Malencamp meets Diana Ross and takes her out to dinner with Freddy Mercury... its vomit inducing.

You touch up on something that hits home for me... it's not even the fact that they don't know what to do... but they don't realize that majority of dance events are created for people, so they can feel natural, but how can a person feel or act natural if walking around with their nose up in the air is what they do all day long and social status is so important that striking a conversation with someone that is not a socialite would be considered un-cool... heh.. yea, I have issues with being objective when it comes to this matter.

They generally don't like parties (the sort of parties that you and I are used to) because there is no social ladder to climb and majority of people at these parties could care less if you have an apt. in SOHO unless you want to throw a party there.

There are few Jungle DJs here that keep it going, for most part it's DnB, Dub step, lots of Jump up... there are weekly and monthly events too. Usually they are confined to bars and lounges. Avalon by the way has been closed for some time now they are trying to turn this abomination into a shopping mall. It has come a full circle hehe.. from an 19th century church through the hottest club in the world right into a shopping plaza. Capitalism at its best.

how accurate is it in your opinion?

Listens to bands that you have never heard of. Has hairstyle that can only be described as "complicated." (Most likely achieved by a minimum of one week not washing it.) Probably tattooed. Maybe gay. Definitely cooler than you. Reads Black Book, Nylon, and the Styles section of the New York Times. Drinks Pabst Blue Ribbon. Often. Complains. Always denies being a hipster. Hates the word. Probably living off parents money - and spends a great deal of it to look like they don't have any. Has friends and/or self cut hair. Dyes it frequently (black, white-blonde, etc. and until scalp bleeds). Has a closet full of clothing but usually wears same three things OVER AND OVER (most likely very tight black pants, scarf, and ironic tee-shirt). Chips off nail polish artfully after $50 manicure. Sleeps with everyone and talks about it at great volume in crowded coffee shops. Addicted to coffee, cigarettes (Parliaments, Kamel Reds, Lucky Strikes, etc.), and possibly cocaine. Claims to be in a band. Rehearsals consist of choosing outfits for next show and drinking PBR. Always on the list. Majors or majored in art, writing, or queer studies. Name-drops. May go by "Penny Lane," "Eleanor Rigby," etc. when drunk. On PBR. Which is usually.

Yea.. I think Poland still has some time before the self destructive capitalistic counter cultures sprout all over. The pseudo hip hop branch that has evolved could be one of the many warning signs hehehe.
(I know about Avalon, I mean the fact it is not running, not the fact it's going to be a shopping mall ;) ).

Majority of cool spots in NYC that used to represent some cultural icons have been turned into either sheik shopping spots or coffee shops that serve overpriced coffee and play pseudo world music or easy listening. A friend of mine used to organize events downtown, city events like block parties where families would gather to party and BBQ, music.. you know – fun stuff. Yet she was shot down after complaints from people like Madonna, De Niro and other rich fools who just happened to own property on those blocks and didn’t share the enthusiasm for family aimed fun. What really sucks is that NYC used to be full of block parties every weekend, now unfortunately due to the climbing numbers of folk who could care less about mingling with their neighbors or having a fun filled day in the streets full of smells, music and smiling children… well… laws were altered or changed altogether to pretty much make those who contribute in elections happy. Nauseating.

WOW, Lidia! Spot on - is that Wiki speaking? Hahaha. I might add that some hipsters really are starving artists and really are very creative and doing cool things. These are the elite hipsters that are so cool they don't act cool, you know what I mean? And a lot of them are displaced thirty-somethings. They are not young and cool anymore, what to do? Fake it.
