Well...Metallica was cool up to "...and Justice For All". After that I pretty much agree that they got only got worse.Metallica sucks, sucked and will always suck...
It's all about Sepultura.
Sepultura - long time ago I used to listen to stuff like Arise or Dead Emryonic Cells
You know, I never got into Metallica, it all of the sudden blew up, but I was more into Megadeath and even that was limited to few albums.
Sepultura, Sodom, Kreator, The Exploited that was my cup o' tea
Yep, Megadeath was also top on my list, especially In My Darkest Hours and Mary Jane. Kreator - have a few old tapes in the basement. Can't say much about Sodom and Exploited since I never really listened to their stuff.

I'm familiar with the song and saw them perform it when the album And Justice for All came out... but I can't really discern a real riff in this song.

Opening arpeggio is a 5-6 note repeating pattern continuing till the words go: "Hold my breath as I wish for death... ".It is the skeleton of the song where all verses and guitar solos constructed on.
Most of the known riffs are based on simple arpeggio runs actually... and "arpeggio" means, group of notes from a chord which are played one after the other and let ring for a short time.
