Thin Lizzy weren't the original authors of the song.
It's a traditional Irish ballad dating from the 16th century.
Thin Lizzy were the first to make a rock version, however.

You know, I never got into Metallica, it all of the sudden blew up, but I was more into Megadeath and even that was limited to few albums.
