Grazyna, I don't think that Steve asked his question just to make fun of the holiday.
I never said he did! In my post I asked him if his intentions were more on the joking side...
Only few people are able to say what exactly will be celebrated on 22nd in this country to the point of closing everything down.
yeah, I've not seen it for a few years now, so I shouldn't really talk about it....
And another thing is that so few of us can just have a normal discussion about religious views without getting offended, taking everything personally or starting a crusade.
who's starting a crusade? :) I'm not a Catholic to take this topic personally:)

So, all in all a jolly good little thread!

I think Steve H came closest to answering the initial question: it seems to be that in the 13th century a nun thought it would be a fine idea to celebrate the celebration of the holy communion (a celebration within a celebration, so to speak) and the pope at the time heard of a miracle where blood appeared in the host somewhere and he was then well up for it! The obvious date for celebration would be the time of the original communion (holy Thursday) but this was believed to be too close to Easter to punch its weight, so God's Body day was moved to some other Thursday after Easter.

Glad we sorted that out. Now I feel confident that this Thursday I can dance around throwing flowers safe in that knowledge! Anyone care to join me?

I remember very nicely a God's Flesh celebration which once i attended in a German town near Aachen. There were bratwurst and beer at the end after a a few hrs of singing loud German Christians songs and marching. It was awesome :)

In Polish church is only one thanksgiving day - celebrate on 7th June, I think. It was started by abp Nycz last year.

According to Panorama, it's a day of public expression of faith in the fact that real God's body is disguised as the host. Since this is the fundament of Catholic religion, no wonder the holiday is considered one of the most important (and therefore imposed on the all-Catholic Polish nation).

I think all those religious festivities must have been created for a reason; probably to attract people to their respective churches. I really do not understand being religious (and I mean those who truly BELIVE) but I guess it must be fun to take part in all those rituals.
