There are so many of these portals now....

What are the advantages of them?

What do you like or dislike about them?

Which ones are worth spending time on and for what purpose?

Also are there any other discussion groups where you spend your time?

Mine are:

http://www.politics.ie (over 5k posts).

and

http://www.maes-e.com (Welsh language).

Nasza klasa is terrific if you want to find friends scattered all over the world. One horrible drawback - anybody can find you. Even if you don`t provide much info about yourself, there are your schools, friends, class groups... Once I got a message on GL stating: "I`ve read about you on n-k"...It was a bit shocking as I didn`t know the person writing to me

At first I was connected via Linkedin: I use it to keep track what former colleagues are doing.
Secondly: I get an invitation via Facebook. In the beginning it was really a pleasure to try all these different possibilities.
Next: Plaxo. It's similar as linkedin.
Next: Goldenline - In the beginning I was thinking why not. Let's try ... everything in Polish. But then I found the English groups and now I spend a lot of time on GL. Great !

I'm so glad Guy that you've found a place for yourself here:))
It must be tough to live and work here without the language. Looking forward to your opinions on things.

I tried out Nasza Klasa once but hated it. Well, I kind of got invited there but soon it seemed to me that it's really just for Poles who want to catch up with long lost friends.

Does NK have any other possibilities that I'm missing out on? Should I rejoin? Or is it really just a Polish thing?

I think it is for Poles.
I like facebook a lot, because I lost contacts with many of my past friends and I don't mind being found by them. Even my ex-es are in my friendlist.

So, would you say Facebook fulfills the role of a kind of international Nasza Klasa?

Steve, I can not say yes for your case.
My past lies mainly in Turkey and little in US, so it was good for me. (Facebook is very popular in Turkey).
I don't know the popularity of facebook in UK and Poland.

PS. But the user interface and ease is great. Very user friendly.ilter K. edytował(a) ten post dnia 10.07.08 o godzinie 08:47

I used to have an account on facebook. Well, I still do, but it's suspended (my decision).

I have a myspace account too. I don't really myspace all that much. Thinking of letting it rot in peace.

LinkedIn does it for me businesswise.

GL does it for me on a social level AND I also use it for some professional issues.

N-K - I do have a profile there... well - shoot me!

I've been trying to find the best message board / portal for amateur musicians. I've checked out http://globalmusiczone.com and http://streemo.pl . Both decent, but not exactly what I want. The search is still on.

I definitely spend most of my online time in GL, though.

It's all your fault, you lot are crazy!

I registered first in russian services http://vkontakte.ru (kind of facebook, for students) and then on http://odnoklassniki.ru - nk in russian
but I really enjoy GL much more than facebook and NK
Russian service - vkontakte is good - all the people with whom i studied, and with whom i don't want to lose cantact are there! Nice! NK is a bit specific ;)
I like GL most ;) simple interface, good groups, where people discuss things in life, and "eternal" topics
What do you think of GL?

I almost never log on NK, but people often tell me they've found me there.
As for GL - well, a useful little gadget ;)

Never understood the principle behind Linked In. I have an account there but virtually never use it because I can't for the life of me fathom out the point of it... Any one help?

I'm on Facebook because my English friend invited me to it.
I don't like the graphically complex interface, it gives me a headache. I keep it just for my international friends who aren't that many.
Now I have it in Polish, so maybe more Poles will appear but I'm not a mad collector of friends really.

I find NK useful and I'm one of the 11 million enthusiastic users.
It's ugly in terms of interface but quite easy to use. But both my parents and almost all of my huge scattered family are there, so we kind of keep in touch this way.

LinkedIn is boring and since I'm not in IT, I don't need it, I think. I'm there because someone invited me long time ago.

I'm a person who doesn't like to show my professional profile unless it's really necessary (for me), so things like GL and LinkedIn put me off really with your life summarized in a couple of sentences. grrrLidia K. edytował(a) ten post dnia 10.07.08 o godzinie 09:32

I started to use 'Friendsreunited' (nasza klasa for English-speaking countries) but got sick of people I don't really remember trying to persuade me of the benefits of pyramid selling.

Anyone there yet?

I just remembered one heartwarming story related to NK

Accidentally I found the profile of one of my teachers from the primary school. We had political classes with him, and it was right before the communism collapsed, so the education was 'socialist' indoctrination really. My teacher was excellent at it and I think you might become a communist after his classes.

The thing is that he remained in the same school for many years, and obviously had to change what he taught (I didn't know his views) after the major changes in Poland. He retired last year I think, and from the countless enthusiastic comments in his profile about his teaching style of his students I conclude that he was a really good teacher. But his career started in the wrong times...
