3. Formal education or the University of Life? What's your take on that?
University of Life. No-one will tell you more about yourself and how you should fight for yourself than Life itself..

4. Pick a colour that would sum you up - what would it be?
wow, hard one. I know I luv orange... but does it sum me up?

5. What's the best place you've ever visited and why?

1. How would you define "success"?
It's not mine, but I can't think of any better definition and I agree with it:
“To laugh often and much; to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children...to leave the world a better place...to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded.”
/Ralph Waldo Emerson/
2. Is there any piece of graffiti you've read and thought "Hmmm... that's not bad!"?
Hmmm... can't remember, so I guess no :)
3. Formal education or the University of Life? What's your take on that?
A little bit of both. Maybe not even a little bit, I just think both are important. Life will not necessarily teach you what you can learn at a University and vice versa.
4. Pick a colour that would sum you up - what would it be?
Green. Definitely. Supposedly, it’s a colour of hope.
5. What's the best place you've ever visited and why?
I believe that the best places are still waiting for me, but if I had to choose one I have already been to, I'd say (apart of my Mum's house) Badlands National Park, South Dakota.

1. How would you define "success"?

Peace of mind

2. Is there any piece of graffiti you've read and thought "Hmmm... that's not bad!"?

Plenty

3. Formal education or the University of Life? What's your take on that?

I think a bit of both helps, although the University of Life tends to be more fullfilling in the practical field.

4. Pick a colour that would sum you up - what would it be?

Green

5. What's the best place you've ever visited and why?

Montreal, the whole package is simply amazing, people, vibe, architecture, food, art, freedom and many other things. I love that city.

1. How would you define "success"?
Success as far as oneself is concerned is to achieve your objectives or ambitions. How high you set your targets is up to you as long as you don't have regrets about it later.

2. Is there any piece of graffiti you've read and thought "Hmmm...that's not bad!"?
I'm against graffiti on principle, in the same way as I wouldn't remark on a good piece of litter or vandalised phonebox.
No remarkable slogans come to mind, though I remember the example used in the book "Eats, Shoots and Leaves" where the author recalls how an idiot had written "Nigger's Out" on a wall, and a grammar pedant (and anti-racist) had later written underneath "But he'll be back later"
3. Formal education or the University of Life? What's your take on that?
By University of Life I assume we are talking about developing emotional intelligence. Well, whilst there are plenty of clowns out there with degrees, I wouldn't feel happy to know that my doctor or property surveyor had learned their trade doing odd jobs whilst trekking across the Andes.
It is a controversial opinion I guess, but I think that far too many people go to university. A large proportion of people spend 3-5 years studying something that they (or in fact practically anyone) will never use in their professional lives.
4. Pick a colour that would sum you up - what would it be?
Black. A bottomless pit of negativity and despair.

5. What's the best place you've ever visited and why?

The only place to make me say 'wow' in recent years was Venice. I went in February 2001. It was all nicely painted (post-millenium celebrations, I guess), very quiet, and enjoying beautiful unseasonal weather.
However, the time I actually felt best was visiting friends in Tricity in 1998. It was during the summer after uni finished. I had no problems, no obligations, was on holiday, and I was amongst friends. It didn't matter too much where I was.

Ok, sorry - I should have added "and if so, what was it and why did you like it?" ... I mean, "plenty" doesn't really do it for me. It didn't really change my life in any major way

Plenty

Ok, sorry - I should have added "and if so, what was it and why did you like it?" ... I mean, "plenty" doesn't really do it for me. It didn't really change my life in any major

It’s really hard to pinpoint any specific pieces, there are so many different styles, from wild style which for a while was my favorite, to block to geometrical figures… but there are also characters, I mean, there are books written on this subject, and it would take a book to pretty much answer this question. In the Bronx, there are areas covered in some amazingly beautiful pieces portraying the city and the city life, in Brooklyn you have some amazing post apocalyptic terminator meets mad max type of paintings, and in Queens one mural definitely sticks out – a post 9/11 tribute to those who fell, but also reasons for what has happened and it’s simply breathtaking quality art.
While in Montreal in September, we arrived shortly after a graffiti contest, and since in Montreal graffiti is considered art (as it should be, and anyone who says otherwise I’d dare to try and at least copy some of those pieces or even much simpler “throw ups”)
all it takes is for a building owner to agree for the artist to have a brand new canvas.
I was able to see some of the most amazing pieces from people all over the world.
When you say graffiti, you should be a bit more specific as well Steve, it is a blanket word that covers a wide range of things – from some dumb little kid writing – “komuno wroc” on the wall to some of the most extravagant works of art in our century.
So yea… I have seen plenty of both.

Here is an example of a WILD STYLE done by a friend of mine Deadly Buda back in early 90's

Having achieved one's goals keeping body count as low as possible.
2. Is there any piece of graffiti you've read and thought "Hmmm... that's not bad!"?
I'm not a fan, but I admit to have seen some good stuff.
3. Formal education or the University of Life? What's your take on that?
Both, in life you need to find a good mix of theory and practice.
4. Pick a colour that would sum you up - what would it be?
Back in the gloomy days it used to be black. Now I'd say blue is my favorite color. Matches my eyes, they say ;)
5. What's the best place you've ever visited and why?
Sopot - between September and June. The only city I can relax in.

I think I expressed question 2 too ambiguously: The question is "Have you read any graffiti which ...." so what I was trying to get at was slogans, street philosophy, that kind of thing... witticisms, things that made you think.

I wasn't expecting anyone to describe pieces of artwork!!

"Nie przejmuj sie, jutro bedzie wojna"
(Don't worry, the war starts tomorrow)
"A na drzewach zamiast lisci beda wisiec komunisci"
(and on trees instead of leaves we will hang communists)
"wszystko jest do dupy, tylko pasta jest do zebow"
(everything is shit except for TOOTH paste)
"zycie jest jak papier toaletowy, dlugie szare i do dupy"
(life is like a roll of toilet paper, long gray and worth shit)
"kupie ci kredki, jak bedziesz grzeczny beda z grafitem, a moze nawet kolorowe"
(i'll get you some pencils, if you're lucky they will have graphite, maybe even in color)

"ziemia dla ziemian a ksiezyc dla ksiezy"
(earth for earthlings, moon for priests)

"panstwo zywi i ubiera, nie obciazaj go - umieraj"
(ANYONE WANTS TO TAKE A STAB AT TRANSLATING THIS ONE?)

"czolgo do Wolgi, smrod na wschod"
(Tanks into the Wolga river, stench eastward)

There were so many more...

Not many graff artists over here do slogans, most just work on the artistic aspects of it. I guess most people come to a conclusion that if you are going to get caught doing something, it should be worth getting caught for hehe...

one thing that just came to mind, in Williamsburg (part of Brooklyn) someone once wrote - "Yuppies go home!"
about a week later someone else wrote in
"we are already here"Rafal Wolk edytował(a) ten post dnia 02.05.08 o godzinie 17:21

No, it wasn't ambiguous. I didn't read the whole question, thats all. I guess none of us did.

The first one that leaps to mind at the moment and one I used to laugh at years ago is:

"My god drinks beer".

It was long before the phrase found its way to the t-shirt industry.

1.I guess for me it would be being able to define success ;] Came up with few definitions but none of them was good enough.

2."Hard work pays off in the future. Laziness pays off now."

I do not advise to put this one in life too often though ;]

3. Formal education or the University of Life? What's your take on that?

UoL ;] Turns out for me that one simple real-life experience is worth more than hours of lectures.

4. I have no idea ;]

5. What's the best place you've ever visited and why?

That would be two places - Port Mcneal on Vancouver Island and Central Cementary in Szczecin. First one because one friend of mine who used to live there and taugh me things which I've never heard of before, the second because it's the best 'walking-and-talking' place I've ever been to ;]

Success is truely achieving your dreams and goals to your satisfaction. It's too bad folks generally think of success as simply having lots of money. Nice to know that folks here think outside that particular box.
2. Is there any piece of graffiti you've read and thought "Hmmm... that's not bad!"?

Impeach Bush, No Blood for Oil(before it became a slogan, it was stenciled on the sidewalk), Dream More / Work Less
>
3. Formal education or the University of Life? What's your take on that?

One perpetuates the other and a combo of both could lead to success! I'm not sure if any particular order is best.
4. Pick a colour that would sum you up - what would it be?

I'm a nice girl, but I can be very morbid. Maybe a soft, pale powder blue on the outside and black at it's core.
5. What's the best place you've ever visited and why?

I'd have to say Montreal in 2000. It opened my eyes to the truth that the rat race is slavery. That success should be measured in experience, not cold hard cash. Growing up poor, I thought that was the solution for all heatache. After visiting the friendly, free, french city I was ready to re-discover life.

I agree with you about the central cemetary.

I've been there many times myself.

1. How would you define "success"?

I think I must have read it somewhere, and I agree with it completely, that success is waking up in the morning, and going to bed at night, and in between doing what you love doing.

2. Is there any piece of graffiti you've read and thought "Hmmm... that's not bad!"?

Eat shit. Millions of flies can't be wrong.

And, the one I often put as my Skype info:
I don't drink water; fish fuck in it.

3. Formal education or the University of Life? What's your take on that?

I agree with Steven that too many people take up university education, especially, in Poland, "marketing i zarządzanie" - or English.
I say sometimes you're better off without too much formal education and I like working with people who have been places and have done things other that taking yet another exam. I can give you a million examples of teachers who have never even been to an English-speaking country, or even had more than a ten-minute conversation with a native speaker. While, on a formal level, they might be quite proficient speakers, they will never be successful. Same goes for agents I've worked with - there are those who run the tourism business just for the money, and the ones who have trekked the world up and down, so to speak, and undersatnd the value of traveling - or good education at a proper school abroad. (I'll elaborate when get back home on a faster connection).
4. Pick a colour that would sum you up - what would it be?

Red. Titian red, to be exact.

5. What's the best place you've ever visited and why?

The Annopol hotel in Warsaw. No, just kidding :)
The best place ever - I think Tokio. Keep wanting to go back for longer, as only spent five days there. What I liked most about it was that you were able to travel from the 21st to the 18th century and back within an hour. And the gardens!

Very true, Tatiana.

This is one of my pet peeves.

These are the kind of people who complain about how badly native speakers speak their own language.

1. How would you define "success"?
Success is to reach happiness in life. It's not material. It's the satisfaction you get when you get up in the morning and think positive.
And, Steve, ask about happiness next time :)

2. Is there any piece of graffiti you've read and thought "Hmmm... that's not bad!"?
I don't remember.

Both, I guess. Plus an open mind.

4. Pick a colour that would sum you up - what would it be?
It is mostly green. Sometimes purple. What does it say about me?

5. What's the best place you've ever visited and why?
All the places where I've been to with my husband.
And the Tatras.

1. How would you define "success"?

This ia a very personal and subjective thing.

It depends on the abilities of the person concerned.

Success in English could amount to everything from having a novel published, to being able to greet people in the target language.

(My wife teaches mentally handicapped adults).

Success for me would be to have a happy family life

2. Is there any piece of graffiti you've read and thought "Hmmm... that's not bad!"?

I once read some graffiti in Lódź which read something like:

DISCONNECT THE ANTITRANSUBSTANTIONALISTS

It wasn't good, but rather it just stuck in the memory.

As some of you may of realised from this forum I'm a connoisseur of weird, random stuff.

Such as outside Fratton Park, home of Portsmouth F.C.:

POMPEY TAME THE LOINS

Presumably they meant the Lions (Millwall).

And:

I BLAME THE PARENTS

For what wasn't stated.

3. Formal education or the University of Life? What's your take on that?

University of Life.

And if anyone wishes to dispute this, compare the writings of Conrad to those of Aleksandra Lojek-Magdziarz.

The former had no formal English education.

As a matter of fact, virtually all great writers of English prose lacked formal higher education.

Poland would be a far better place were its young people not to remain in formal education until their mid-twenties, having their minds filled with rubbish.

4. Pick a colour that would sum you up - what would it be?

The blue of Portsmouth F.C..

5. What's the best place you've ever visited and why?

Perhaps the Isle of Wight where I come from.

White cliffs, beautiful countryside, friendly people, relaxed and slow pace of life.warren whitmore edytował(a) ten post dnia 03.05.08 o godzinie 12:31
