Vaguely related to the "cultural issues" postings...

The other week I popped back to Britain for a couple of days and I found myself in the delightful Northern town of Huddersfield. I found myself passing a "Polski Sklep" and found myself walking inside...

Now, I always thought these shops were for the kind of things that Poles like but not readily available, like those yucky gherkins rotting in jars with strange things inside them, the sausages, pierogi, that bread that I think is too dry and doesn't toast well but Poles rave about, that kind of thing...

Imagine my surprise when I look in the freezer and see "Paluszki Rybne". Now, unless I'm very much mistaken, fish fingers originate from Britain, a magnificent culinary invention from the famous Captain BirdsEye! Fish Fingers are readily available in Britain - it's fish finger city! the country is crawling with original fish fingers!

Can someone maybe explain the point of exporting Polish fish fingers to the home of fish fingers?

Has the world gone mad? Or should I just relax, tune it, turn on, and drop out and go with the flow, man?

They probably all came, Polish and British fish finger, in the same reefer container from China. Then it's just the matter of packaging, I guess...

Hehehe, you can actually find anything in Polish shops here. In the one just round the corner from my house you can even find the English, as it is run by English people!! Can you imagine that? ;)

And Tescos sell beans made in Poland by Tesco Poland :)))

The Polish shops in Leeds/Wakefield sell Polish margarine and cooking oil, all at imported prices! As if there's a difference.

But then again, Marks and Spencer in Warsaw sells bags of sugar so I guess it works both ways....

Aha, Steve, and just how do you expect a decent Pole to find his "Paluszki Rybne" if it says "Fish Fingers" on the box? At least in the Polski Sklep he knows what he's getting!

tune it, turn on, and drop out

hmmm... well if it's these kind of fish fingers, than they are most likely not imported from Poland but maybe from San Fran ;) are they Timothy Leary brand? hehe

I had a simmilar experience, just with books. When I was visiting Poland in November, I really wanted to get some Stanislaw Lem books for my wife in English. Figured, famous Polish writer, most likely translated and printed in Poland right? Hehe... turned out, they were printed in NYC. After I came back to states, I picked up couple from Amazon at 1/3 price of what I was able to find in Warsaw.

Classic!

Actually, in Dublin, a "one and one" refers to Smoked Cod and Chips, because years ago, Italian immigrants came over and opened up fish and chip shops, without learning any English*, and the Dubliners, not having any Italian, used to point and ask for "ONE, AND ONE!"

*or perhaps they had excellent English skills, but couldn't understand the head-the-balls in front of the counter. Talk about culture shock!

This whole thread reminds me of Tomasz Beksiński and his brilliant translations. There is a character called Fishfinger in Monthy Python's Jabberwocky. Anybody remembers what is Beksiński's version of this beautiful surname?

Yeah, like in case of French "bistro" :)

The assumption of the fallacy was never applied by myself vis a vis the supremacy of British culinary exhibits.

And we make pretty breakfast cereals, so I'm sure our fish fingers cut the mustard (or tartare sauce).

And going back to Steve's point, I've only seen one Polish deli, and was surprised to see Twix on sale there.
