Thanks Lukasz!
1. Is it fair that a company director earns much more than, for example, a cleaner?

The pay should reflect responsibilities, time-consume and education (e.g. previous effort). If you are not educated (which doesn't have to be your fault), you have to do jobs which are paid less.
Fairness is rare anyhow.
2.Have you ever been stuck in a rut or in a dead-end job?(If yes, for how long)

Sort of. I was stuck with one employer who didn't treat me to my abilities and didn't recognise my efforts. I took it for one year before I quit.
3.How important is it for you to climb the career ladder?

Not very important, because as a teacher there is not much rat racing. Career ladder is white-collar-stuff. Teachers wear sweaters :)
4.You could do a 3-month work placement in well-known company but it's for free. Would you agree ?

If it had to do with my future plans, and I could 'afford' it, sure.
5. Would you prefer to be self-employed for less pay or beeing wealthy in a totally boring job, for example in a tax office ?

Neither. I could do both for a limited time. After all an aim might justify such means (e.g. being happy with less or be unhappy for some time to be happy later).
Strictly speaking I'd prefer the first option. ;)

Yes
2.Have you ever been stuck in a rut or in a dead-end job?(If yes, for how long)

No
3.How important is it for you to climb the career ladder?

Quite important - progression is a must, otherwise why bother?
4.You could do a 3-month work placement in well-known company but it's for free. Would you agree ?

No. Every job should be paid for. All interns, students, placements etc. are paid (and rather well) for what they do. I know unpaid "placements" and generally common screwing of employees are common in Poland but it is not the way it should be.
5. Would you prefer to be self-employed for less pay or beeing wealthy in a totally boring job, for example in a tax office ?

Tax office :) If you have more money you can use it for fun stuff after hours anyway so this is a no brainer really.

1. Is it fair that a company director earns much more than, for example, a cleaner?
Yes.
2.Have you ever been stuck in a rut or in a dead-end job?(If yes, for how long)
Not really a dead end job, but one of my previous jobs got very frustrating towards the end of the contract (last 4-5 months).
3.How important is it for you to climb the career ladder?
Not particularly important.
4.You could do a 3-month work placement in well-known company but it's for free. Would you agree ?
My first gut feeling was 'no', but actually I think I could accept it, if I enjoed the activity.
5. Would you prefer to be self-employed for less pay or beeing wealthy in a totally boring job, for example in a tax office ?
I need a stable income, doesn't have to be extra high.

1. Is it fair that a company director earns much more than, for example, a cleaner?
Not in my view. The company director doesn't usually get covered in shit or risk catching hepatitis. Or put up with boring repetitive work. In fact let's pay the boss the least. He gets the most satisfaction.
2.Have you ever been stuck in a rut or in a dead-end job?(If yes, for how long)
Ruts are my thing. I can do them for years.
3.How important is it for you to climb the career ladder?
Well in theory the work should get more interesting the higher you get. But I don't believe in climbing ladders just to get to the top. Other than in domestic maintenance situations.
4.You could do a 3-month work placement in well-known company but it's for free. Would you agree ?
Of course. In fact I've done it. It's common in journalism here.
5. Would you prefer to be self-employed for less pay or beeing wealthy in a totally boring job, for example in a tax office ?
I don't think there are many wealthy people working in tax offices. But wealthy in a boring job? No thanks.

1. I totally agree with Bernd. As long as pay gaps are based on merits, efficiency, performance, experience, responsibility, skills and qualifications they can be justified.

2. I started with a dead-end job after my graduation, actually. I managed to get out of it after 5 months, though. Phew.

3. It is important, as long as I climb it at my own pace :)

4. One of my friends is facing this at the moment. She really needs to gain some new experience and is seriously considering doing a short, unpaid work placement.

5. I don't really get this juxtaposition of "boring nine-to-five" and "exciting self-employment". There's much more to life than this on both sides...

1. Is it fair that a company director earns much more
Yes. You couldn't open the doors if not. Noone ever took out the garbage or there weren't any doors in the first place. The cleaner in our example ought to be subject to the same esteems in every other way, i.e., equal opportunities for advancement, continuing education, and have expectations for equal optimisms at the physical plant, apart from pay grade difference like parking, integrated cafeterias, etc. Don't talk to your directors differently than you talk to your cleaners.
2.Have you ever been stuck in a rut or in a dead-end job?
No. I'm slippery :)
3.How important is it for you to climb the career ladder?
It means a better mouse trap in science and engineering, where people get paid. Me? It's not important for me. You? Knock yourself out, man.
4.You could do a 3-month work placement in well-known company but
In that case it's still a trade and it's a good plan D.

thx for challenging Qs!:)
1.it is, unless a director got a job coz they knew proper ppl(which is many times a case).but,in most cases, they deserve to earn more(coz of knowledge,experience,etc.).it doesn't mean, however, they are better ppl...cleaner's job should be respected.
2.unfortunately,yes,for a few years, but I had the guts to break free!
3.it used to be very important, but now I just don't care:)there are many other things more important in life:)
4.if I could afford I would do it.I would hope to reap the benefits in the future.
5.numbers are boring to me, so tax office sounds very scary:)so maybe not necessarily.however, the same tax office could enable my dreams come true.anyway, nothing is black&white.

1. Is it fair that a company director earns much more than, for example, a cleaner?

In some cases it is fair - one's education, competence and responsibility would be the determining factors then. sometimes though, the board may be a bunch of idiots, leaving all the work to their staff. In such cases, it's not fair.
2.Have you ever been stuck in a rut or in a dead-end job?(If yes, for how long)

I am now. i see it's very difficult to get out, as it sucks all the energy out of you. I hope though, I will say goodbye soon enough.
3.How important is it for you to climb the career ladder?

Fulfilling my personal professional ambitions is very crucial to me, but it does not necessarily mean I want to be on the very top. It's what I would actually be doing that matters.
4.You could do a 3-month work placement in well-known company but it's for free. Would you agree ?

Yes, if it was a new area where it is difficult to get otherwise.
5. Would you prefer to be self-employed for less pay or beeing wealthy in a totally boring job, for example in a tax office ?

Self-employed. I do need money, as I am living on my very own right now, but still, what I actually do is far more important.

1. Is it fair that a company director earns much more than, for example, a cleaner?

Nothing is fair in this world. My gran recently announced it's not fair Kasia Cichopek earns such an indecently large amount of money and that there should be a pay band for all actors, just like in PRL ;)

Besides, it's not your education and experience, etc. that justifies high salary. It's what you can do with it. I know people who were very good at school and somehow didn't make it in life. Even if a director got the job through connections, he wouldn't keep it if he was proven to be a crap manager. Or he could cause the company to go bust, in which case he'd lose the job anyway.

Finally, who said a cleaner cannot earn good money? A friend of mine set up a cleaning company in the UK and earned quite a lot more than me. And if you're a plumber, electrician or carpet fitter, you can really rake it because there's a shortage of such people over there.
2.Have you ever been stuck in a rut or in a dead-end job?(If yes, for how long)

Yup. All my cleaning jobs were dead end.
3.How important is it for you to climb the career ladder?

There's not much scope for me to climb the career ladder as such and I don't miss it. But my job is varied, sometimes I have very challenging students and sometimes I teach at a beginner level, some of my students are 'easy' and some are demanding, some are well-paid, some are not.

4.You could do a 3-month work placement in well-known company but it's for free. Would you agree ?

If it could help me in any way, why not.
5. Would you prefer to be self-employed for less pay or beeing wealthy in a totally boring job, for example in a tax office ?

Not in a million years would I do a boring job - however much it would be paid. I am self-employed and I earn a variable salary.Sylwia Łubkowska edytował(a) ten post dnia 08.07.10 o godzinie 17:44

1. Is it fair that a company director earns much more than, for example, a cleaner?

every job has its own value and it's hard to state unequivocally who should earn more.I think that a director has a relatively more responsible job than a cleaner, so the salary must be definitely higher. We should also take into account how much effort each of the person has to put to be prepared for the occupied position.
2.Have you ever been stuck in a rut or in a dead-end job?(If yes, for how long)
No, I haven't, cos I always search for new challenges and no dead-end job can keep me longer than I wish.
3.How important is it for you to climb the career ladder?

My personal success is much more crucial for me, cos it can lead you through the career ladder.

1. Is it fair that a company director earns much more than, for example, a cleaner?

if the director's position is more crucial for the company then yes.
2.Have you ever been stuck in a rut or in a dead-end job?(If yes, for how long)

No, fortunately
3.How important is it for you to climb the career ladder?

Depends on perspectives. If you can make a diffrence in your temporarly boring job, then why not. If you're stuck in a boring job with no perspectives - no money is enough.

1. Is it fair that a company director earns much more than, for example, a cleaner?

Depends what "much more" means. I don't think it's fair that a director might earn 1 million a year and a cleaner might get 10,000. But 100,000 and 20,000... why not?

With these kind of things you have to ask yourself "well, could I do that job?" Could the cleaner be the director? Yes? Go ahead and do it then! Could the director be the cleaner? Probably wouldn't want to but if push came to shove...
2.Have you ever been stuck in a rut or in a dead-end job?(If yes, for how long)
